I began gaining weight after the birth of my daughter in 1990. About the same time I found out I had thyroid problems. I have been on several diets with my husband, some worked, some didn't, but all failed as the weight just comes back on. When I got married in 1984 I was a size 12, and weighed 140 lbs. I was a domestic homemaker until my first child in 1987, and about a year later started working. My husband was good to me, and after working all day, we got into a habit of going out to eat on a regular basis, which started putting on the pounds. After my daughter was born in 1990, things got worse because of a bad thyroid. In 2004 I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had it removed. I’m sure the stress from everything didn’t help with either me or my husband’s weight problem. About 5 years ago my husband and I went on Optifast and did ok and went from 220 to 185, but it came back in about 2 years. We tried Optifast again 2 years ago didn't do as well, only went from 225 to 200. We'll here 2 years later, we've decided that diets just don't work for the long term, and WLS is our best solution. My husband MBowman189 went into Kaiser for a Bariatric surgery referral on September 30, 2010 as his weight was 335 lbs, 6'0" tall, 135/76 BP, which gave him a BMI of 46, and he was referred. It was depressing at his appointment, as my husband asked about giving me one as well, and he looked at me and said, you’re not that bad, and don’t qualify. I’m trying to get a referral as well, as I have a 39 BMI, don't have any serious health conditions, so is just short of the 40 BMI, which is needed to qualify with Kaiser, so my husband has agreed to do a self-pay if needed. I’m going to keep trying, but if not, will probably have the lap band surgery done for my birthday in November, or sooner. My husband probably won’t have his done for 6 months because of the Options classes and scheduling.
We'll the decision to get WLS, and the attempting to get a referral is the first step in our life journey of permanent long term weight loss, and healthy life.
