A little about me

Jun 06, 2013

I wasn't always fat.

In 1957 I spent January to June in a hospital for back surgery and recovery.  The surgery was needed because I had a mild bout of polio in 1950-51 area.  I broke my leg in 1956 and when I came off the crutches, I had a severally curved back.  The doctors said the curvature (scoliosis) was due to polio.

From 1/1957-6/1957 I was in a full body cast, it was called a halo cast.  Then in 6/1957 I got a walking cast (it weight 40 lbs).  So, there wasn't much exercising when I was in the hospital or after I got discharged. After 3 months I switched out of the walking cast to a back brace.  Exercise was still limited.  But food consumption was not.  Back in the late fifties it really wasn't an issue.

The weight I put on during that time wasn't totally lost in the following years.  Partly because of my limited exercise regime.  In fact it was added to.

Later in life it was the birth of 3 children, work stress, loss of several family members.  I have tried different diet plans but none took enough weight off nor kept it off.

With the upcoming ByPass surgery, eating modification, and learning how not to overeat, hopefully I will get down to a reasonable weight.

I do not picture myself at my pre-back surgery weight which was 60-80 pounds, but more in the 130-150 range.  Most charts say I should be about 105-115 pounds, but at my age and bone structure, I feel it is unrealistic. FYI, I am 68, and stand 5'1" and am currently 245 pounds.
