Day after Pre-op

Jun 17, 2010

Yesterday my nephew drove me down from St. George to Las Vegas to
Dr. Atkinsons office for my pre-op appointment. Going into this appointment I was scheduled for surgery on Monday June 21st @ 10 a.m.  We had a small group type of meeting, just 4 patients including myself and of course they each had a support person with them. I had my daughter 13 and my nephew. My mom wanted more than anything to be there with me however she is in Kansas and trying to get out here. The meeting was very informative and although I myself had very few questions the other patients asked great informative questions that really helped me out. We went over the general pre-surgery stuff....showering with antibacterial soap, no food or drink after 10 pm for me, what meds I can take the morning of surgery. We went over supplements, proteins, protein supplements, side effects of the surgery and then went over the medical side of things with the Physicians assistant. Half way through it all one of the ladies from the office came in with files and called my name. My heart sunk! I thought for sure something was wrong and I would not be having surgery. To make me a little more unsettled she stated I would most likely be mad. I assured her disappointed I would be, mad I would not be. Then she stated that the surgeon had a family emergency and they needed to reschedule me. They were not sure exactly but were trying to get me in on July 1st. I took a deep breath! Disappointing yes, however I let her know that was fine with me. At check out I was told July 1st @ 10a.m. was my confirmed surgery date and time. We immediately headed to the hospital to pre-register. Got that all out of the way, did some medical questionaire and was on my way. It was not until I got almost back to St. George, Utah that I again became excited. Armed with additional tips and information from the group I spent most of the night online doing research, making lists and getting more mentally prepared. My weight at my pre-op appointment is my all time high of 316.

There was a time I would of never shared that with anyone but my mother, however I now feel like saying it is just confirming I will be letting go of it.
I at this point will be going to surgery with just my Nephew and Niece. I have 4 children of my own however with my health issues in the past they have all been through so much with me they prefer not to see me in anymore hospital beds. My oldest is on his own and has a family so he has obligations of his own right now. My sister that lives here in Utah wants to go but is unsure of her work schedule, I have 2 other sisters in Las Vegas who I am sure will come check on me rather they can be there by the time I come out of surgery or not I know they will be there. My mom is trying desperately to get things together to be there with me. I also have 3 brothers, 1 lives in Kansas and I dont expect to see him, I have one that lives in Vegas but is starting a new job so I am unsure if I will see him. My youngest brother I expect to also make an appearance. I am at least hoping he does.
I have purchased some supplements and vitamins and a few other items to include a GOOD treadmill, recumbant bike, and my kids favorite a fair sized pool for an added excersize with a change of pace and fun for all!  I bought what I thought was a good whey protein supplement only to find out not so good. I gave that to my boys as they all 3 work out and it will be better for their purpose than my needs. I will be purchasing Pure flavorless protein in addition to that I will be also purchasing for variety Perfect Natural Isopure vanilla and also Inspire Dutch Chocolate Cake (as I hear it is a good base for warm drinks like hot chocolate and added to decaf coffee. I was also advised to try the all natural sugar alternative Just like Sugar or Sweet Leaf, which offers their product flavored in a dropper bottle. I will also be obtaining a sample pack from Sweet Leaf they have a website however I did not save it. You can review Just like Sugar at justlikesugarinc.com.  I have so much going through my mind right now I feel like I am just running around in circles. I am trying to recommend as I learn or come across things so I can better help anyone looking for help, advice, or just recommendations. OH! yeah, I am also going to purchase from JuicePLUS, I would recommend you check into this product as it not only gives us the vitamins and minerals from the fruits and veggies we will be missing it also gives all the other positive components of these fruits and veggies. It covers 17 fruits, veggies and grains. For those of you who are not already aware I would recommend at least checking out bariatriceating.com This is where I will be purchasing much of my protein powder that I dont get from my surgeons office. Their prices are even better than what I have found with GNC and a few other places. I have not checked into it yet, but yesterday I was told that Costco carries a bulk whey protein supplement. I was also told that Wal-Mart carries a liquid protein "bullet" which I will also be investigating. No reason not to save some money where ever I can with all the needs I will have and changes to my medicine cabinet and pantry I will be making.
Well There is so much running through my head, I apologize for the rambling. I will be starting next Thursday the 24th on pushing fluids even more, implementing the sipping and no straws, and focusing on my nutritional value of what I intake and implementing my food journal. I will be having my "Last Meal" probably Tuesday or Wednesday. That gives me time to ponder what I will "miss" for a while....lol. To all of you having surgery today or upcoming in the very near future my wishes and prayers are with you. I wish you nothing but lost pounds and improved health! Good night all.
