Two Years!

May 10, 2010

Wow- I can't believe it's been two years since WLS!  I'm doing fantastic! The main reason I had WLS was because I needed to loose weight to have a better chance to have successful fertility treatments.  It worked!  I got my BMI to 30 by the time I went to the Fertility Doctor in March 2009 - I weighed 203lbs!  I had IVF and got pregnant.  I now have a healthy baby boy who is almost 5 months old!  Yippee!

During my pregnancy I gained about 20 lbs. which I lost by the time I was two weeks post partum.  My pregnancy was healthy, although I didn't gain very much weight.  I ended up with pre-eclampsia at 36 weeks, even though my blood pressure had been normal up until then.  I was induced at 38.5 weeks and had a healthy baby boy, who started out a light weight at 5lbs 9oz but who has more than caught up and is in the 95th percentile for height and weight now.  I nursed my son, but I gave up after 2 months - I was never able to produce enough breast milk to satisfy him I always had to supplement with formula.

I now weigh 199lbs - not bad at my height - 5'10".  I usually wear a regular size 14 in everything.  I sometimes have trouble finding pants that fit due to my larger than average thighs and knees, but when I do, they are size 14.  I look great in clothes, but my upper arms and thighs are saggy - I don't look good in shorts or a bathing suit - I live in houston, so I have to go sleeveless, but it's not all that pretty.  My breasts are pretty saggy - I wear a 34 DDD bra size and underwires are a must.  Once I'm all trussed up I look great. My stomach is a little loose, but not so bad even after the pregnancy.  My scars are noticeable and have not really improved since the six month mark.  I won't be wearing a bikini any time soon, but a girdle isn't a must either.  I think I need plastic surgery to look better naked, but that will have to wait until I have more money and I've lost more weight.

As far as eating is concerned, I typically am able to eat about 1/3 to 1/2 portion at a typical restaurant.  I can't eat certain foods including pan cakes and shrimp without throwing up.  I still sometimes throw up if I eat something I have trouble digesting or don't chew up my food enough - this happens to me about once a month now.  This is a small price to pay for sustained weight loss!  My eating habits post pregnancy are not all that great and I'm not exercising at all other than strolling with the baby 3 or 4 times a week.

I'd like to loose about 25 more pounds so that I can get my BMI under 25.  To do it I think I'll have to either exercise  a lot and/or really watch what I eat.   Right now that doesn't seem like a big priority - I've got a new baby and work and I'm pretty busy managing my new lifestyle.   I feel really good and look pretty good - all and all I'm really satisfied with WLS.  I want to have another baby as soon as we can.  If I'm fortunate enough to have another healthy pregnancy, I'll worry about additional weight loss then.    I'm so glad that I've been able to get through pregnancy without permanent weight gain!

I feel confident that I'll be able to maintain my weight for ever - I feel like with some attention I can loose more weight - heck I might be loosing weight very slowly while I'm not paying attention to my weight, that remains to be seen - maybe I'm loosing 1/2 a pound a month or so now - at that rate, I should be at goal in about 4 or 5 years.

WLS rocks - I think it was the best decision ever for me.  My only regret is that I waited so long to do it.  I should have done it years ago!
