I am a father of 2 young children aged 4 and 2 and a husband to a wonderful wife who is very supportive of the journey I am on.  I am also a kinesiologist and health science researcher. My PhD thesis was heavily involved in obesity and I currently work as a post-doctoral fellow researching BMI.  It is a bit ironic that I am so educated in the area of obesity, exercise and nutrition, yet here I am, pre-op for Bariatric surgery. I am also an active member of the Canadian Obesity Network, so I keep very current with many topics relating to obesity and health.

I have been heavy all my life but I ignored it most of my life because I was so accomplished in so many sports. It wasn't until I stopped being competitive due to injury that I truly realized I had a problem.  I quickly gained 50-60 lbs on an already obese frame. I tried time and time again to correct it, often losing 30-40 lbs only to have the old injuries, herniated disc, siatic nerve, arthritis flare ups in my ankles, sore knees, the list goes on.  for me when I wasn't able to be active, I ate. so I gained the weight back time and time again. Now a father, I want my kids to grow up with a healthy happy father, maybe if I am lucky, they won't remember Fat Dad. I have hypertension and Sleep Apnea, history of diabetes in the family and while my sugars were in the normal range, they have been trending upwards in my blood work.  I decided that surgery would give me the best opportunity to get to a point where I can be healthy and enjoy my family.
