I've always been "big" since I can remember. I was never really bothered by it. I developed health issues very young, I was diagnosed with HBP at age 15 aand Diabetes at age 18. I never did much to address either. I was young and could handle anything. As I got older and "matured" I saw a Dr. would take meds (when I remembered) and sometimes got on a diet and lost some weight. When I met my now husband and we began talking about marriage (late 20's) I figured children were the next step so I had to get healthy soon. After visiting my endo he mentioned that Imight have trouble concieving and put me on new meds. Within a month after being married we were pregnant! Alot sooner than planned and I wasn't quite where I needed to be health wise. So a few more tweeks to meds and injecting insulin during the pregnancy. My sugar levels were amazing everything was great til we hit week 28. I went to the ER with a swollen left leg, fearing it was a blood clot my OB insisted i get it checked out. Since the majority of my swelling was arounf my anckle they X-rayed it a well. At the end of the 6 hour adventure in the ER the ER doc determined it was tendonitis that wouldn't be able to be treated until after the baby. (keep this in mind we will come back to this) About a week after this on my way home from dinner with friends i blinked and when I opened my eyes i saw a pink spot(like when a flash from a pictures lingers a bit) only it never went away. After getting checked out the Dr. determined I had severe retinal detachment in my left eye and a small detachment in my right eye.  Since I couldn't have surgery until after the baby was born i had a little laser treatment to try to stop the bleeding which was cauing the pink spots. This, the Dr. explained was a result of the diabetes and pregnancy hormones. "But I've have perfect blood sugar levels the entire pregnancy!" doesn't matter the damage was probably done before i even got pregnant and I never noticed. So a few weeks after this I am scheduled for my 32 week visit. The OB had an emergency so she was going to be a while, when the nurses take my vitals my BP is high after a second and third reading the nurse called the OB and i am to report to the Hospital to register and for observation. Well a few hours observation turned into an over night observation to a we might put you on bed rest and then to this kid os coming tommorrow to tongiht all of this in less than 8 hours...oh did I tell you it was my birthday? Well my beautiful perfect child showed up 8 weeks early and she was fine! No breathing issues she learned to bottle feed quickly and she was out of the hospital a month before her due date. So now that we had her home it was time to take care of Mommy. So I had my first eye surgery on the left eye as soon as i was released from my OB's care. Shortly after that I went to my ortho to get treated for my Tendonitis (remeber the trip to the ER?) Well after an X-ray he asked "When did you break your foot?" I laughed cause I was tired of crying. So I had to have surgery to repair "Charcot Foot" its a condition where diabetics cannt feel thier foot breaking left unattended can cause deformation...It has been two years since my husband and i were married and in that time I've had a baby, 4 eye surgeries, 1 foot surgery (which left me immobile for 3 months and I gained 60 lbs) I made the decision to have WLS when i couldnt lose the weight. the heavier I got the more insulin I needed, the more insulin I needed the heavier I got. I am so ready and excited to meet the new me! I want to have at least one more child but i need to get healthy, this is the start of my new healthier life!
