Insurance troubles again

Oct 02, 2007

So we have been talking to the insurance broker for awhile now and he has been doing a lot of research for us about other insurance companies that we could switch to that would cover the WLS. However, we haven't been able to find an insurance company that will cover the WLS for small businesses. There is a clause in so many of them that says they will only cover the surgery if the insurance is through a company with over 1000 people ...we have more like 50 so that is definitally not going to work.

It really bothers me that they would discriminate small businesses like that. Small businesses have to pay a higher premium for insurance as it is, and then they give us such restricted insurance coverage. It sucks, and there isn't anything I can do about it.

On another note...I am feeling kind of crappy lately. I know I have gained more weight but I am to chicken to step on the scale and actually see how much I have gained. School is stressing me out majorly and I just want to be done with it all.

Class has offically started back up again. I have 8 more months and I will be able to graduate and start a real life with a real job! I am excited and counting the days.

Since classes are back in session all the aerobic classes have started up again as well. I checked out the schedule and to my surprise I actually found a class that I was interested in, that fit in my schedule, and it was FREE!! The only free class that is offered. So today I went and started water aerobics. There were5 other ladies in the class today. The usual instructor wasn't there for some reason so one of the other ladies who has been in the class awhile ran everything for us. I was the youngest person in the class by at least 20 years, but I had a great time. All of the ladies were so nice and helpful. There is a class that meets everyday around lunch time so I am planning on going as much as I can this semester. Hopefully once I get into this routine I can also add going on long walks at night to destress me from all the homework I have.

An update about my insurance woos...The insurance broker finally called back, but not while anyone was around to take the call so we are still playing phone tag. But at least some information has been passed along through all the messages. At the very least our insurance policy is up for renewal November 1st, so if it can't be changed before then, hopfully it will be changed then.

I have my stress test scheduled for next Monday. I am hoping to discuss with my doctor then about starting a supervised diet that way if the new insurance plan requires one, I will have already started it and maybe I can get this process moving along a little quicker.

Thats all for now. I'll post again when I have some new information.

The joys of a new doctors office...

Aug 20, 2007

I had my appointment with my new primary care physician today. She seems like a nice lady. There was a lot of paperwork to fill out and a bazillion questions about my past medical history as usual. I spent over 2 hours in the doctors office, but when my doctor did come in to see me she didn't seem rushed and she spent a good amount of time talking to me. She sent her nurse in and they did the EKG. My doctor came back in and said that everything looked good there, but since in the past I have had chest pains while exercising she wants me to have a stress test done.

She had a lot of questions about my insurance coverage of the WLS that I couldn't really answer since we are trying to get my insurance switched over. But I am glad she didn't just brush the idea of surgery off.

For the past 4 or 5 years I haven't really had a PCP so when I needed to go to the doctors I just went to the on campus clinic. Now I have to contact all of the places I went and get my medical records released to her. That should be a fun journey.

I asked her if she knew of any licensed psychologists that I could get my psych eval done with but she wasn't too helpful in that department. She suggested I call the local clinic that does bariatric surgery and see if they could get me in with one of their psychologists, but they might not because I am going through a different clinic. Who knows, we will see what happens when I call them this week.

Insurance...

Aug 10, 2007

I am kind of bummed out right now. I haven't been able to think of anything except this surgery since my consult last Friday. Yesterday afternoon I got a call saying that my insurance doesn't cover WLS. I knew there were going to be bumps in the road along the way, but I didn't expect it so soon. I've talked with my mom and my boyfriend and we are going to try and call the insurance company and see about getting the plan changed so I can have the surgery. I am just wondering now how long they are going to make me wait once we change the plan before they will cover it.
