Well I am 3 months post op today. I have lost 58 lbs so far. I feel great. My husband and I have been going to the gym 3 times a week. I am a little worried about my hair.. I have been shedding a lot. My hair feels lifeless. Nothing I do makes it look good. I am sure its just a phase. My husband looks great. He has lost 46 lbs. He is having surgery on April 23rd.

My story

Mar 04, 2007

I am 34 years old. I am very happily married to my best friend David. We have 2 sons. Andrew who is 13 and Ayden 18 months. Andrew is my stepson. I have been his mom since he was 9 years old.

I have always been overweight. I was chubby until 3 years ago. Over the past 3 years I have gained over 100 lbs. I lost my mom who was my best friend on 10/31/04 to lung cancer. She died a month after my wedding. I got pregnant 2 months after she died. My due date was 9/9/05 which was my mom's birthday. I had my son 2 weeks early. When my son was born he inherited a condition from my husband called pyloric stenosis. This is a problem with the opening of the stomach. He had surgery when he was just 6 weeks old. They were supposed to give him Tylenol.. instead they gave him morphine. He went into respiratory failure and coded right in front of my husband and I. They were able to bring him right back. Very traumatic, but he is wonderful now :)

To deal with my mother's death I ate, and ate. I felt cheated. I had waited my whole life to get married and to have children and she was not here to be a part of it. So I ate. I hated what I had become. I did not want to leave the house ,I felt so bad about myself. I was embarrassed. I wanted to be healthy for my children.

My sister (who lives in Boston) and I had a conversation about Gastric Bypass surgery. We both wanted to do it since we both had gained so much weight after the death of our mother.  She started the process a few months before I did. She had her surgery on Sept 13th 2006. I saw her about a month after and she looked amazing. It has been almost 6 months and she has lost 75 lbs. Her husband also had surgery (lap band) in support of her and he has also lost close to 75 lbs.

My surgeon was awesome! He was very thorough I had to have a psych evaluation, endoscopy, sleep study, bone density test and a ultra sound of my heart. He made sure that I was healthy before my surgery. I had my surgery on 1/15/07 . I was a nervous wreck the night before but I knew it had to be done. When I woke up and I was sick from the anesthesia. They fixed that right away. I was in a lot of pain. I developed pneumonia and was in the hospital for 5 days. I am now 7 weeks post op and am feeling GREAT. I have lost 43 lbs so far.  My husband has been wonderful through it all. He is also having gastric bypass on March 19th. He is very excited. We have been going to the gym 3x a week. I can't believe how much better I feel already.
