A little over three months since WLS

Apr 09, 2008

An update. Well, it has been over three months since surgery. It seems like it was just yesterday and then, simultaneously, eons ago. The experience has made for a steep learning curve. I have learned and am still learning what I can and can't eat, and some of them don't make any sense. For example, I can't eat chicken breast or eggs of any kind. Yet, I can eat any salad, bacon, and popcorn. I wish I had learned earlier that popcorn is a "slider" food. It sure is for me, too. I can eat quite a bit of popcorn with no problem. The whole surgery bit was really uneventful. I feel fortunate to not been in a lot of pain as some others have been. I didn't even realize that I had a drain in till late on the second day. That was nasty, but I'm sure it was necessary. In any event, I got it out the next day before I left the hospital.

I started working out at a gym less than a week following surgery. Since I was in little to no pain following surgery, it was easy to do so. I didn't know how to use any of the "machines" or weights there, so I got a personal trainer. While I can't afford to do this for long, it really has been worth it. Brigit is great, although I am really sore every time after any of our sessions. However, I can say that I have seen improvement in my strength and endurance. And I think I vastly prefer "working out" to walking. There are quite a few occasions of windy days where I live and I am just inviting allergy problems if I go out walking in the wind. So, I head to the gym at least 3 times per week. That I am enjoying going is one of the biggest surprises so far.

Yes, I have lost weight. It seems that I have not lost weight as quickly as many others, but at least the scale is heading downwards. As of a few days ago, I have lost 46 pounds since the day of surgery. Also, I am wearing jeans that are three sizes smaller than I was wearing at surgery  time. Today I mailed off three pair of my "old" jeans to someone else on OH. And I know she is looking forward to getting rid of those jeans in the near future, too. Of course, I have one pair of jeans, which is leaving me fairly short on jeans. And speaking of short, the clothes I can realistically wear to work are getting fewer and fewer. I still think I have enough shirts and dresses in smaller sizes, but I only have a few pair of pants that fit right now. And they are getting loose. Don't get me wrong; it's a good problem to have.

I'm trying to stay positive and believe that it is all good. And mostly it is.

The Day After Tomorrow

Jan 05, 2008

OK, I am not a big blogger, but I am sitting here tonight realizing that my surgery is less than two days away. I am nervous and excited. Both, definitely. At times, I am thinking, "What do I think I am doing?!" At others, I am quite calm. This is all internal, of course. I am not saying any of this out loud. So, Monday, Jan. 7, 2008 at 11am is when IT (i.e., RNY) will occur. I will be positive about the surgery and candid about the experience. Deal?
