10/19/02 - It's been a couple weeks since my surgery. I just thought I'd let everyone know I'M ALIVE - survived surgery on 10/1. I had some complications breathing in the hospital. I had a sleep study done and found out I do have some sleep apnea. I have to sleep with oxygen. I will eventually be fitted with a CPAP machine but the pulmonologist wants me to wait until after my next surgery. Next surgery you ask? I have to have arthoscopic surgery on my right knee from a car accident I was in on 8/20. I have a meniscus tear. So recovering from 2 surgeries will be fun. I had my staples out on 10/14. On that day, the scale also showed I lost 24 pounds. That really made me feel good. I thought it would be difficult eating 2 tablespoons of this and 2 tablespoons of that. But I'm managing okay. My mom made me some casserole dishes with protein, carb and a vegetable (I only like peas)in it and put my allotted portions in baggies and froze them. All I do then is take out a baggie and thaw it out and have my meal. I'm really a picky eater so getting in fruits is also hard. I use baby food for that. Hawaiian Delite, yum, yum!!! It sometimes is hard to get all my meals in but I just do my best. I do suck on a lot of ice and try to drink all my water, but it's hard. I just like the feel of cold going down my throat. I tried driving the other day and felt a lot of pain on left side so I think I'll wait a few days for that.

She made it through! Karen is now on "the other side" with us posties! woohoo! I talked with her on monday and she's doing fine. Frustrated with the weekend staff, very much so, sounded like they were slackers!Didn't change the bed, or her gown..but! first thing Monday she complained and it was ALL taken care of. She was going to have to have a more intense? sleep study done before she went home so she could get her own CPAP machine. No complication and she didn't have to get a central line put in either. She's also quite prepared as she's got a hospital bed at home to come home too. What a blessing that will be huh? Plus her mom in law is going to stay with her to help out and they've got an extra room just for her! Karen is going to have to have surgery on her KNEE only 2 weeks? later on the 31st to repair injuries she received in a car accident shortly before her RNY. They'd decided to put this surgery off so she could go ahead and get the major one done (rny) BREE Write to her and welcome her to the OTHER SIDE!!

KAREN came through with flying colors! didn't even have to have a central line put in. WOOHOO! we talked for a bit this late afternoon and she's already had some actually bites of food, the ole ground chicken and gravy! So I'm assuming the leak test came out fine! I'll talk with her tomorrow and see how things are going beyond then. She sounded REALLY good! Bree
