I have a different story because I was pretty small when I was younger up until the age of 33 (I am now 45) until I was diagnosed with a rare lung disease called Sarcoidosis and had lung surgery in 1996. I was put on steroids for almost 6 months and was also on huge amounts of hormones for endometriosis. I had a bad reaction to the steroids and had cushing syndrome (I swelled up basically) and started gaining lots of weight. This messed up my thyroid so I am on thyroid medicine and I became insulin resistant (borderline diabetic).
So a few years ago my doctor put me on the south beach diet and I was weighing 258 at that time. I lost about 40lbs but kept it off for awhile but could not go past that amount because of my metabolism. My endocrinologist stated that it would be extremely hard for me to loose weight because of all of my problems like the Sarcoidosis, PCOS, Endometriosis, Insulin resistance, but felt that I needed to get the weight off for medical reasons. I am extremely active, always have been was a former dancer, and now I do belly dancing, luv spin classes, etc. I had been having so much joint pain (which is one of the symptoms of Sarcoidosis) the last few months and not feeling well at all so I opted to do this. It took forever to get approved through BC/BS since February and now here I am 11 days post op. Dr. Lyass, his staff, and Northridge Hospital were excellent, I would recommend them to anyone who wants to get the surgery in Southern California. They are state of the art with their procedures, I had the Roux-en-Y.
My head is really playing a trip on me right now because I am not sure what to expect or how I am going to feel after losing all of the weight. I am missing food a little, because i have always loved healthy good food....lol. One thing I do know is that god is by my side and supporting me all of the way.
Oh by the way I am getting married to a beautiful man named Michael who is very supportive in May 14, 2011 so I have something to look forward to.
