Pre-surgery, 280 lbs. 6.5 months post-op, 212 lbs.

To be honest, I really started down this road because my sister had RNY surgery in February, 2004, and I was so jealous! I just couldn't stand the thought of being the "fat" sister! Even though I had become morbidly obese myself, she had always been bigger than me, and it was driving me crazy that she was going to be thin and I was still going to be huge! So without even really researching properly, or really asking myself if I could live with the results, in September of 2004 I decided to have an RNY myself.

So I found an excellent RNY surgeon (Dr. Frantzides) and began my pre-op testing. I had completed everything except the endoscopy, when the gastro doctor said that she wanted to do a colonoscopy also because of my age (54 at the time) and because I'd never had one done. So no problem, what's one more test? Except instead of a routine test, they found polyps, which turned out to be cancer. So instead of having weight loss surgery, I had colon cancer surgery instead.

Fast forward six months. I have now recovered nicely. Everything was caught very early, so it was really a blessing that the gastro doc insisted that I have the colonoscopy done. It was also a blessing in another very important way. I have discovered the Duodenal Switch surgery. I now know for certain that I could never have lived with the restrictions of RNY surgery. I see the results of that daily with both my sister and my daughter. For me personally, I would rather remain obese than have an RNY. It is just not something that I could live with. The DS, however, even though it will probably be a more difficult recovery, offers the hope of a much more normal post-op quality of life, not to mention better weight loss and better long-term weight maintenance.

So, I've made my decision - for me, it's DS or nothing!!
