My story begins well before Fall of 2009, but I am going to begin with my decision to take drastic measures with my health and weight. At 43, I had way too many health issues and my weight was gradually increasing. I had struggled with my weight ever since I had my 4 children.  I started out on the normal end of BMI and I gained and didn't lose near enough after each child. In the meantime, I had been diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, and eventually diabetes. My diabetes remained under control with diet and oral meds. However, with the Apnea, my bloodpressure started to be elevated and I was on meds for that. Also, due to the diabetes meds, my cholestor needed help so there were additional meds.

Early fall 2009, my diabetes started to be out of control. During this time, I was trying several different oral diabetes meds in several different combinations to no avail. The one thing I never wanted was to end up taking insulin. I had done a little research and was considering the Lap Band. I went to the seminar and was not sure if I wanted the band or the RNY. In Jan 2010, I had my first appointment with my surgeon. I had told him the #1 reason I was interested in the surgery was to help get my diabetes under control. He suggested the RNY because that has been proven to significantly reduce if not reverse the diabetes. WIth my insurance I needed to have the 6 months of supervised diet/nutrition and after all of that, they can send the info to insurance and then set the appointment date. WIthin this 6 month period, I did have to start insulin. May 9th will be my last nutrition appointment and I have already had my psychological evaluation. I am hoping to find out I have approval from the insurance co and get a surgery date by the end of June 2010.
