First weekend

Feb 27, 2011

Saturday,  Day 1
- A lot of pain.  This was my roughest day.   I took my last dilauted (sorry spelling) at 11pm.  I'm sticking with tylenol.  The nausia is killing me.   It's really had to get the 4oz meals and water in.

- Sunday, Day 2
Feeling better.  I can't believe I've come to a point in my life that I'm happy to fart.  LOL  Doing better with water and 4oz meals.  I had boost, skim milk, boost, tomato soup and 5 cups of water.   Sunday night around 11pm was really bad.  Really nausious.    I took my badages off and had my shower.  17 staples.  I've never seen staples before.   My cat wants to cuddle and I can't... this is rough.  Feeling better though

- Monday, Day 3
Feeling better.  I got up this morning and had my pills, 6oz boost and having tylenol shortly.  I have made some phone calls and emailed my sugars to Linda from Diabetic teaching.  She's my contact to my Endo.   I expect some visitors today, but not many.  Talked to my boss and now going to go for a little walk downstairs to see the Momma.   They have been worried about me.  TTYL.

Day of Surgery

Feb 27, 2011

The night befor surgery we checked into Country Inn & Suites on Mountain Rd, Moncton.   It was a nice room with 2 queen beds and a ground floor.  Great, I hate elevators and free WiFi!   The have complimentary coffee, tea, and cookies in the lobby and a complimentary hot breakfast in the morning.  I can't eat, but it was good for my husband and Dad who came with me.

Supper we went to Jean's Dinner, 3 mins up the road from the hotel.  Dad and Dale had the meatloaf.  They said it was the best.  It sure smelled good.   They have homemade soup there, so I told the waitress that I was going for surgery and would I just be able to have a bowl of the turkey rice soup broth.  She only charged me for a cup of coffee and brought me the bowl of broth.  It was delicious and I felt like I was eating.

I'm on an insulin pump so my Endo advised me to turn all my basals down my half at supper time the night before and disconnect the day of surgery.  I didn't sleep much that night.  I got up a 7am, disconnected the pump and had a shower.   We got a cab to the hospital.   I was a nervous wreck.  I've only had my tonsils out and that's it for any medical treatments.

I checked into day surgery where they did my IV.  Little tip, when you are not eating or drinking... your veins suck!  Mine collapsed.  Finally they got it in.   I was given Heprin a blood thinner in my arm 2hrs before surgery.. It hurt!  Dale never left my side.   Dad stayed in the waiting room.  They wheeled me at 11:30am into the operating area and parked me in their little parking lot.

The anestesiologist saw me and a nurse.  They put the blue hair net on me.  My arms hurt from the IV.  I got wheeled into Room 2.    A woman said, I'm Rose, your nurse and this is Fred.   He said I'm Dr. Beausoleil's assistant.  The wheeled me closer to the bed and I said what do you think we're doing here with this other bed.  He said you're going to climb on.  Well first of all, I'm wearing nothing but a johnny shirt that doesn't cover much because well I'm bigger than the damn thing.  He said we'll keep the blanket on you to keep you warm.  I told him you just make sure my ass doesn't hit this floor.  He laughed and said I wouldn't.  I got  onto the other bed.  Fred who was wearing a lovely superman hat was over me and the anestesiologist came in and said Fred was going to give me oxygen and she would be putting the stuff to put me to sleep through the IV.  It happened fast.   I'll admit even up to this point.. I wanted off the table.  I'm a chicken and was terrified of all of this, but I want a better life for Dale and I.  A healthier life and hopefully kids.

The next thing I remember was pain and this voice talking to me as I woke up in the Recovery room.   It wasn't too bad, but the naustia.  Oh I thought I was going to be sick.   They shot me with drugs, I put my hands on the rails and started my peddling and deep breathing.  I tried to just keep doing it and I asked if I did good.   The nurse said yes.   I didn't know but the surgery took 2hrs.   I set the alarms off once and 3 nurses yelled at me to breathe deep.  I was just so tired and I wanted to be with Dale.  Finally they wheeled me to Day Surgery... with my head up thank god.   I'm a bit of a control freak, so head up was better for me.

I had these huge maxipad things on my legs and they were plugged in to help with circulation and they kept checking my incisions.    I got more drugs again I felt like puking.   I was looped!  I finally had to get up and go pee.  2 nurses got me up and took the maxipad things off my legs.  I got to walk to the potty with a housecoat drapped across my backside.   Then back to bed.  Dr. B came in about 5ish and got him to sign my work form.  Oh but we had drama.  Shoppers was closing because of the storm going on and we needed to get my perscription filled.... and I was still in day surgery.   The nurses were great.  They called Shoppers and got them to stay open and put Dale in a cab to get my drugs.

Now I've been off my pump all day and it's now 6ish and I'm feeling crappy.  I asked the nurse if I could hook up my pump.  She said no and did her vitals check.  She checked my sugars and it's freaking 12.8.  I said I need to hook up my pump.  She said no because I'm not eating anything.  I asked about my insulin drip.  She said you're not on one.  You are on glucose.  OK, so my head went to why the hell am I not getting insulin and getting pumped with sugar.  I  told her my Endo advised me how to work my pump and I was hooking up.    So, I hooked up my pump and it took a bit, but finally by the time I got home the sugars were 10.9 and down to 8 the next morning.

The trip home was awesome.   The cabs were being pulled off the road so we learned from Dan the cabbie the rescued my husband from shoppers.  He gave Dale his cell number and said he would make sure we got home.  He did and he drove very well for such bad weather with me in such pain.    The hotel staff was great and friendly, but I'll admit when we got home on Friday... I was glad to be home.
