January 13, 2003... Stopped at the hospital to pick up copies of reports needed for an appointment on Wednesday. I'm bummed. First, the lab didn't draw the "blue top" tube of blood. That's okay, though, they did that today (sure glad we caught it, though!). Second, looked at the lab results. Cholestrol is a little high. Triglycerides are WAY high. AST(U/L) is high. Glucose is MUCH TOO high. RBC is high. Hemoglobin is high. Hematocrit is high. MCHC is low. MPV(fl) is high. Mono (X(103) is high. hemoglobin A1c, LPLC is high. Microalbumin is off-the-chart HIGH. Microa (Creatinine) is off-the-chart HIGH. I don't even know what some of these things are...but it can't be good. Third...Made the mistake of looking at the EKG. The note says "abnormal" and mentions a "block", an enlargement, abnormal wave progression, and "nonspecific abnormalities". Again...this can't be good. Fourth...Also picked up the report from an echocardiogram. Here we go again. Report suggests a mild aortic valve stenosis and/or ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Fifth...called BC/BS SelectBlue to ask about some costs related to my surgery but not part of the surgery. The gal told me that my authorization was "good" only for 12/12 - 12/15 of 2002! She says I don't have approval for my scheduled surgery date of February 13, 2003! Yesterday, Evereything was falling into place. Referrals were made, appointments were set up, I had begun the testing, things seemed to be clicking right along. My ducks were lining up... Today, I feel as though someone blew away at least one or two of my ducks! I guess this is where it all gets tougher... Yesterday, I felt sooooo

I have been interested in WLS since 1985. It was then that I was in paramedic training. We spent time in all areas of the hospital, including surgery. One of the procedures that I observed was an (old-fashioned) stomach stapling. One of the nurses in the OR (a petite little thing that couldn't have weight 100# - soaking wet) said she had the surgery two years earlier. She looked great! The surgery was interesting although it put me off of citrus for a long while. The doctors made the long incision - but not very deep. They stood on either side of the patient and inserted their fingers into the incision and literally pulled her abdomen open. Did you know that the layer of fat that we tote around looks a lot like a section of orange that is broken in the middle? Ick! I had asked my doctor about stomach stapling and he gave me a list of reasons that he would not recommend it. In 2002 I had a lot of breathing problems and was referred to a pulmonolist. A wonderful woman named Dixie Lee Harris. We did a sleep study, a bronchoscopy and eventually, I had my tonsils, adnoids, and uvula removed in September 2002 (to help with sleep hypopnia). It was the pulmonologist who has spurred me on to WLS. I spoke to my PCP in August about it. Although still reluctant, he made the referral. I think that this is truly meant to happen for me. Everything has gone pretty well so far (knock wood). September 30, 2002...submitted questionnaire / health record to surgeon's office. October 29, 2002...attended group workshop (by surgeon invitation) to learn more about GBS. January 2, 2003...received call that my insurance has approved procedure...AND received two dates to talk with surgeon - as well as my surgery date! January 8, 2003...Saw my PCP today. Hoping that he will help me get the testing done. To my surprise, he is totally "on board" with the GBS! He said that he has become very interested in WLS since the Al Roker story came out. Shocked me! January 10, 2003...have all appointments for necessary consultations set up. January 11, 2003...Gave blood and urine samples for labwork; had EKG; had chest X-ray. Have fingers crossed that all tests are good.
