update

Apr 22, 2011

I now have a new grand daughter.  It was nice to participate in the birth and not have problems standing up while helping my daughter to deliver.
The last time I got weighed I was at 158 lbs and this is the same as I was about a month ago so I guess that I have now stablelized and have stoped losing weight.
I had to go and have a new picture done for my drivers licence and my OHIP card because I have changed so much that the police told me that I had to do so in order to have my security clearance for my volunteer work.

new update

Nov 24, 2010

I went to my family doctor today.  Everything seems fine other than a bit of swelling in my left leg so the   doctor ordered some blood work just to make sure that there is no underlining cause for the swelling.
I have lost another 5 lbs bringing my weight lost to 190 lbs and puting me at 10 lbs away for my weight goal.

no change

Nov 07, 2010

I went to see the nurse practitioner on Wed. Oct. 26 and got weighed.  I am still at 165 lbs so I have not lost any weight, for the first time, since my surgery.  I'm o.k. with this because I know that I have to stop loosing at some point or else I would wilter away. lol  I now wear size 14 in pants and medium in tops.  I don't even remember being this small.  I have been a big girl ever since I became a teenager.

The funny thing is that I had to show my driver's license to some people who are refusing to believe that I am the Thérèse that they knew.   Even a police officer that was investigating a break-in I had at my camper told me that I will have to update my I.D.s because I have changed so much.  I can now see the small me. I can now see me in the pictures of when I was very young.

update

Oct 29, 2010

I finally have a computer at home again so I can now update my weight lost.  I now weigh 165 lbs.  This means that I'm 15 lbs away from my goal weight giving me a total weight lost of 185 lbs.   I had plans to celebrate in some way on the aniversary of my surgery wich was on Oct. 14 but life being what it is, I got busy and forgot to do so.     When I can I will update my picture because I have changed quite a lot.  I now fit in size 16 pants, medium in tops and  I have gone down 10 sizes in my bra.    I no longer or rarely use my cane to walk now and the same goes with using the scooter at the store.  I can also stand in line at the bank without going into a sweat because of the pain.  I don't have to look for harmless chairs to sit on and can fit in booths at the restaurants.  Mind you their are some foods that I still can't tolorate but I can live with that because I have lots that I can eat now.  Later today I'm going to a bar for the first time since my surgery.  We are celebrating my best friend's birthday and I hope to be able to dance for the first time in many years.   Got to go to bed soon so will let people know how that went at another time.

update

Mar 26, 2010

I went to my appointment with Dr Starr and explained to him my problem with my stomach.   Has soon as I told him what was going on he told me that he knew what the problem was and that he can fix it in 2 minutes, 3 if he takes his time.  He told me that when I'm done with the bariatric clinic and the blood work to go to the 5 th floor of the hospital and I will get a gastroscopy done and that this will solve my problem.  The doctor assured me that this is not so unusual, that this can happen to 15 % of patients who have RNY surgery.   So I did has he told me but because I started getting sick to my stomach has soon as the I.V. was in and it continued after the procedure he decided to keep me overnight in the hospital then he kept me for one more night to make sure that I would keep solid foods down without stomach problems.   At the same time I was pumped with multivitamins and more importantly with potassium because that was really low at 2.6.   I had been trying to get my potassium up for weeks and the medication I was given did not seem to do the trick but it worked through the I.V. and before I left it was up to 3.3 which is in the normal range.   Dr Starr asked that when I get home that I make sure to eat 1/2 a small banana a day to keep it that way so I told him I will do so for sure.
Anyways a one overnight trip to Toronto ended up being a 3 overnight stay after all.  Thank goodness for my older kids who made sure that my 15 year old was being cared for or I would have been a bucket of nerves worrying about him at home all alone.
I feel better now and can eat again without heartburn or stomach pains which is fantastic.
I will be returning for a follow up on my stomach problem on April 13 but if I have any problem before that I'm to call Dr Starr right away and get myself to the emergency department.

update

Mar 11, 2010

I received a call again from Toronto, advising me that the surgeon had to rebook my appointment with him again.   This upset me, but when I called the office I found out that he can see me one day earlier so I'm not so upset anymore.  The only thing is that I have to be at his office for 7 a.m. so has usual I will go to Toronto the day before and this way I will be there for that appointment.
I went to see my family doctor, here in Ottawa and found out that my potassium is still too low so I have to take more potassium supplements to compensate.  My blood pressure is great and my doctor decided to take one of the the pills I take for it away.  If things continue to go well I will be able to stop taking medication for it soon.  Has far as food is concerned, I'm starting to be able to eat more stuff now that I am feeling better.  ( I sort of had to pretty much regress to a liquid diet for a few days after  I got sick but I can tolerate a soft diet now. )
The doctor weighed me and I now weigh 224 lbs.  This means that I have lost 100 lbs since the surgery or if you count like I do the weight lost before the surgery then I have lost a total of 126 lbs since I got referred to Dr. Starr for the surgery.   I count those extra lbs lost because they are also gone and deserve to be counted has so.

new update

Feb 22, 2010

I was called by the health center because my doctor was worried about me and wanted me to come in to see the nurse practitioner.  They were worried because I ended up in emergency last Tuesday and wanted to check on how I was doing now.
I am doing better but I still have major heartburn that makes me sometime sick to my stomac.  -*-  I ended up in the emergency because I was not keeping anything down not even water.  I was but on I.V. and kept until they were satisfied that I was keeping at least water down so I was sent home at 3 a.m. after being seen by a surgeon who told me that they were satisfied that it was my actual stomac that was causing all the problem.  Mind you they could not explain why I'm having so much heartburn and were not sure what to give me for it.  They suggested that I try Pepto-Bismol.  (This works somewhat)  They also found that my pottassium was still pretty low so they made me take pottassium liquid then pills before letting me go home.  They tried giving me the liquid pottassium but I did not keep it down so they waited a bit then gave me crushed pottassium pills and I was able to keep them down.
Today, they nurse suggested that I try Tums or Calvesgon for the heartbun and let her know if these work for me.
The nurse also weighed me today and I now weigh 234 lbs, a 90 lbs lost post op but if you count the 26 lbs lost pre-op I have lost 116 lbs in all.

Follow up

Feb 08, 2010

I was suppose to go to Toronto tomorrow for a follow up but I got a call canceling the appointment because my doctor has a surgery to do that day on a cancer patient.  I am very disappointed about this cancellation but not too upset.  I will be going to see him on March 24 th instead and this means I will have lost that much more weight.

new update

Jan 28, 2010

I went to see the nurse practitioner on Jan. 25, 2010 and she told me that my potassium was still low so she would talk to my doctor and the doctor will decide if I should be on potassium supplements.   The doctor did call to let me know that she called in the prescription for the potassium.
I went to pick up my prescription only to be told me the pharmacist that that particular one is not covered by my drug card so he will have to contact my doctor because the liquid one is covered but  he needs to know from her what dosage he should give me of this liquid medication.
Today I went to the pharmacy again hoping to pick up my prescription but now the pharmacist tells me that he did not have it in stock so he had to order it for me so to call him tomorrow to see if it's in.
This is the drawback of small pharmacies but the service other wise is great.
