The Basics

Jun 28, 2008

I am 34 years old and have struggled with my weight since I was 12.  I have tried numerous times to lose weight - weight watchers, south beach, optifast, nutrisystems, personal trainers - you all know the drill.  I always said surgery would never be an option for me.  After struggling with my food and lifestyle issues for the past two years, making healthier choices and still not losing the weight, I finally realized I am not going to be one of the 1-5% of people in my weight group (Super Morbidly Obese) who can lose weight and keep it off with diet and exercise alone.

I did a lot of research, lurked on the message boards, spoke with my primary care physician and found a surgeon I trust.  I am scheduled for Laparoscopic RNY Gastric Bypass July 2, 2008.  I am so excited I can hardly think of anything else.

Interestingly, I am not worried about the actual surgery and any complications.  I am young, relatively healthy, have followed all the pre - op rules and have a good surgeon.

I am also not worried about the lifelong changes I will be making.  I know that completely changing my life will be harder than anything I have done before.  However, I have a huge support system of people who care about me, and I'm ready to make my health the number one focus in my life.

The thing I worry about the most is the 2 days in the hospital being poked and prodded.  What if the pain meds make me throw up?  Weird.  :-)
