Moving forward for an even greater weight loss goal

May 14, 2012

Well...I have never maintained a blog here but since I made a very serious decision in the last few weeks, I thought it would be nice to put my feelings down on "paper' here.

In 1998, I had a gastric bypass.  I was a clinical trial for a aparatus knows as the "Silastic Ring".  The idea of the ring is that it was placed at the bottom of your stomach to help hold in nutrition as the food traveled through your stomach to the intestine.  My starting weight : 380.  Fast forward to 2012.  I am 200lbs.  I have maintained a 180lb weight loss for almost 14 years in December.  I have gone from a size 32 to a size 14/16 but I have never gone beyond this weight loss.  I have been blessed and happy with the surgery and I made alot of changes to be in the place I am now.  Don't get me wrong, I have my share of junk food but I changed one thing that has helped me maintain my weight...

I became a triathlete.

In 2000, I ran my first sprint distance triathlon and I was hooked.  Today, I have done over 60 triathlons...7 of which have been half ironmans.  I have done 4 marathons and over 37 half marathons.  I have done so many 5k's I can't keep count and I love the wonderful adventure the success of this surgery has shown me in my life.  BUT...after all this time, I have never reached my goal weight....and I am ready to do that.

I have made 2 attempts at completing an Ironman triathlon and have failed both times.  My new life goal is to get to my goal weight so I may make an attempt at completing the Ironman and be lighter and fast enough to make the 17 hour cut off time.

So two weeks ago, I decided to get a band over my bypass.  I believe this will give me additional restriction that I have not had in a long time and will help me over the hump to remove the last 30 to 40 pounds.  I look forward to the rewards and the challenges this new surgical option will bring.  My surgery date is June 20.
