At Last!

Jan 02, 2012

In 2004, I had the Lap band. After 4 years, multiple fills-- so tight at one point I couldn't swallow my own spit in the morning and all that for 17 lbs down, I had it reversed. I felt worse about myself than prior to the surgery. Somewhere in my mind, I KNEW it wasn't that I ate too much but that my body held on to every single calorie I ever ate. I looked for a surgery that would fit my situation and decided that the Duodenal Switch was my best shot at finally losing weight and ending my type 2 diabetes.
On Nov 9, 2011, I went through with the DS surgery. Now 7 weeks later I am finally feeling "myself" again, there were no major problems, the worse part was lingering soreness in my rib area were the retractors were--it's just an adjustment period to the body and the mind. I am now down 35 lbs., 17.5 total inches and I am not a diabetic anymore. At this point, I'm scared that I'll wake up to find it's all a dream...I had really almost given up that I could ever be a "normal" size person. It's humbling and I am so thankful that I didn't give up on myself. I can eat just about anything, although for health reasons, I choose to eat my proteins, then vegetables...it's nice to be able to choose, before I was always starving, never satisfied, now I have to be conscious of the time and eat so I don't miss giving myself the nutrients that I need. Usually, I can eat about the size of my palm, sometimes the size of my hand, depending on the density of the food as my main meal the other two meals seem to be smaller in size but that's fine. There's no dumping or pain, I stop when I first feel full and all is well. I can also tolerate milk fine which I am happy about. I can't do too much fake sweetener drinks like crystal light, for some reason and I stick w/ decaf teas if I want something hot. Also, my tastes have switched w/ protein drinks, my first choice was always chocolate but now vanilla agrees w/ me more, so I just go with it.
All in all, I'm one thankful person, I know the journey has just begun for me but it's been amazing so far. Feel free to contact me w/ any questions. God bless!
