08/21/2008 - Just Checking In

Aug 21, 2008

No real news here.  Just wanted to update my page.  I'm still fluctuating between 255 and 257.  I can't wait to get to the surgeon on September 3rd.  I am hoping that he'll give me a fill / adjustment at that time because at this point I have no restriction at all.  And, will power alone isn't helping me lose at this point.

We've spent the past few weekends out of town.  The weekend before last, we went camping in Cherokee, NC which is about 2 hours away.  It was a really beautiful area and the weather was just perfect for camping.  While there, we spent some time in the downtown area of the Indian reservation and visited all the shops.  I'm pretty sure we'll be going back there eventually.  We all really enjoyed the area.

Then, last weekend, we went down to Columbia, SC which is also about 2 hours away.  While there, we went to the Riverbanks Zoo and to Palmetto Falls water park.  We were originally only going to stay one night but had so much fun down there we decided to stay a second.  We also hit the Ft. Jackson commissary while we were down there and picked up lots of meats and cheeses since they're so much cheaper than the regular grocery store.

Anyway, other than that, there's nothing new going on.  Just waiting to start getting my fills so that I can start losing some weight!

08/15/2008 - Finally!!!

Aug 15, 2008

Ok, I got on the scale this morning and it said 255!  I know it's only a pound.  But, after watching the same numbers on the scale for several weeks, that pound means everything to me right now.

It's been 3 weeks since my surgery.  So, I'm tryng to get more exercise and be more active now.  I went on a bike ride with my daughter yesterday.  And, the hills totally kicked my butt.  I think I must've overdone it a little because, by the time I got home, I felt nauseous and sick to my stomach.  And, it wasn't because of the heat.  It was only about 75 degrees out at the time.  The last part of the ride, I just really pushed myself too hard I think.  I'll have to find more flat land to ride on for a while, which won't be so easy around here.

08/11/2008 - Stuck In A Rut

Aug 11, 2008

At this point, it is really difficult to eat limited amounts of food.  I haven't had any fills yet and have no "restriction".  So, I'm working strictly on will power alone right now.  And, if I had will power, I suppose I wouldn't have ended up in this situation to begin with.   I'm really hoping that the surgeon will give me my first fill when I go back for my next appointment.

At least my weight is still holding pretty steady and I'm not gaining.  It sure will be nice when I see it drop below 256 though.  I'm sick of seeing the same old numbers come up on the scale.

08/05/2008 - Measuring Cups

Aug 04, 2008

The scales are holding still for me at 257.  So, I think (no, I "know") I need to go back to weighing my food for an exact measurement.  I've been guesstimating, which for a person in my position, is probably not the smartest thing to do.

Now, speaking of measuring foods... here is the link to a youtube video that was sent to me by a friend.  It questions the use of measuring cups v. nutritional scales.  I myself have noticed a difference in the measurements since I got my nutritional scale.  So, I found this to be very interesting.

07/30/2008 - Wow!!!

Jul 30, 2008

Okay, I don't know what happened.  But, I woke up this morning feeling pretty darn good!  (Yay!)  This is the first day that I got up and wasn't in a lot of pain.  I actually felt as though I had some energy.  So, I spent most of the day running errands.  Not to say that my incisions aren't still sore.  But, up until today, I've had a very uncomfortable "bloated" feeling.  So, this is great.  I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that my good fortune will continue from here.

1 Week Post-Op - 07/29/2008

Jul 29, 2008

Well, it's been a rough 24 hours.  First, I strained a lower abdominal muscle yesterday.  Since I can't lift anything, I thought I was  being smart by pushing my basket of laundry down the hall with my foot.  Apparently, I was using abdominal muscles and didn't know it.  I couldn't even stand up straight last night and had a sharp pain in my lower abdominal region most of the night.  I finally decided to take some pain medicine this morning and it knocked me out.

When I woke up, the pain was mostly gone..  I hadn't eaten breakfast yet.  So, I decided to have a bowl of cereal while I was checking my email.  Apparently, I didn't chew well enough or ate too fast.  However, I didn't realize this until it was too late.  By the time I finished my cereal, I started feeling extremely nauseous and light-headed.  I thought for sure that I was going to throw up and was dreading the pain I'd experience in my stomach from this.  But, I didn't get sick.  I just ended up dry-heaving over my kitchen sink for about 5 minutes.  This was still extremely painful and I was so glad when it was over.  I  then lay down in my bed and waited for my disorientation to pass.  After a few minutes, I felt "normal" again but have been experiencing nausea off and on all day.  Oh well, live and learn...

Ending on a positive note, I weighed myself this morning and have lost 10 pounds since I had my surgery last Tuesday!!!

Day 3 Post-Op - 07/25/2008

Jul 25, 2008

Well, the pain from my incisions isn't quite as bad today and the gas pain has subsided quite a bit.  I'm still having some very sharp gas pains in my chest that arise spuratically.  It feels like heartburn or acid reflux but I know it's from the gas.

I had cabin fever today so I took my oldest out into the pool for a while and then we went on a short walk.  I also drove for the first time today.  It was just a short trip up to the store.  I noticed my list says I can have cottage cheese so I had to get some!

Today was the last day of my post-op liquid diet.  Tomorrow, I will be able to start eating soft and pureed foods.  I'm not much on pureed foods.  So, I'll probably be making sure everything is pretty well cooked so that it's very soft.  I'll also have to chew very well.  I will have to continue eating the soft foods until I return to the doctor on August 13th.

I'm supposed to be eating 3 "meals" a day (if that's what you want to call them).  And, these meals are not supposed to exceed a cup.  I haven't even been able to eat a full cup so far.  But, I know my stomach is swollen still so I'm not sure how long that's going to last.

On the liquid portion of this 3 day post-op diet, I've been eating protein shakes, soups, grits, etc.  So, it hasn't been too bad.  I am excited, however, that I'll be able to eat more solid foods tomorrow.  I think we're going to have chicken on the grill tomorrow night.  YUMMY!

Also,  the anesthesiologist called on Wednesday to see how I was doing and I found out what was cauring the problem with my vision.  It was the little tab they put behing my ear to help the nausea.  I took it off and had my normal vision back within 24 hours.  Kinda funny, huh?

SURGERY - 07/22/2008

Jul 22, 2008

My surgery went through without a hitch this time and I'm currently at home resting.  The incisions, my stomach, and my chest are very tight from the carbon dioxide gas so I'm taking plenty of Gas-X.   Other than the gas pains, I'm not in much pain.

I laid down and took a nap after I got home and woke up with blood all over the bandage where my port is.  I called the doctor's office and she said it was okay to remove the bandage to check the wound.  It had that saran wrap like tape covering the bandage so I was a little hesitant in taking it off.  But, I had to make sure the wound hadn't come open.  Even though I wasn't bleeding profusely, it was still a pretty good amount.  Well, my husband and I took a look at it and, thank goodness, it appears to be okay.

Lastly, I'm sitting here on the computer with my glasses on.  What's so funny about that you might ask?  Well, I also have contacts in right now.  I'm not sure why.  But, ever since I got out of the hospital, I can't read anything with my contacts in.  I see okay.  But, here I am sitting at a 22 inch monitor and I can't read anything without my glasses on.  And, then I can see.  How weird.  I wonder if the anesthesia affected my vision slightly for the day.  Oh well, I figure it should be back to normal by tomorrow.  I just thought it was kinda weird.

Well, that's it for now.  Thank you all for your kind messages and words of support!  I'll check back in again in a day or two.

New Surgery Date (AGAIN) :)

Jul 17, 2008

Dr. Gersin's office called today.  They said Dr. Gersin is going to be out of town on the 24th.  Being that I was scheduled to have surgery on that date, they recognized the potential complication of not having the surgeon present for this procedure, they rescheduled me for 7:30am on the 22nd of July.  Yay!!!

06/30/2008 - New Surgery Date

Jun 30, 2008

Well I'm generally a pretty proactive person.  But, I practiced some self restraint and decided not to call about rescheduling my surgery from my hospital bed on Friday.

However, this morning was quite another story.  I figured that I've been home for several days without incident.  So, I hoped they'd feel comfortable rescheduling my surgery at this point.  Of course the person who normally schedules the surgeries is out this whole week.  But, as I was kicking myself for not calling Friday, the person I was speaking to said she would see what she could do.  In less than a few hours, I received a phone call back with a new date and time.  I'm supposed to be at the hospital at 7:30 on Thursday, July 24th!!!

She reminded me that I need to start my liquid diet again 2 weeks before surgery.  (YAY!)  So, here I go again...
