I found this wonderful website last year when I lived in Amarillo.I did not even realize they did lap RNY's. I loved reading all the blogs and information everyone has posted. I recently came back to this site after finding out my mother had a lap RNY on Oct 19,2006, of course she did not tell anyone that did not live in Ca until after it was over. My mama is 64 and did not want me to have my stapling in 1987 and I think was afraid to let anyone know she had this done until everything was ok.

Mama said the Dr's told her she would live out retirement on medication unless her weight came off. She was on medication for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholestrerol. She day of her lap RNY, she was told NO MORE PILLS, except viamins. She could not even take her 800mg of motrin 3times a day for her knees, both knees had been operated on. As of 2 days from now (April 19) she will be 6months out and her blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol are all normal, and she has not had a pill other than vitamins or occasional Excedrin since surgery. And she has lost 85LBS!

I weigh 80# more now than mama did when she started. I am 45yrs old, my knees hurt a lot, I can not do anything in comfort. I can not ride in other peoples cars if they did not have extentions on their seatbelts. My BP and cholesterol are creeping up. No meds needed, YET!

My husband has been big most of his life except when he was in the USMC from 1975-1980. He has done most of the diets with me and lost weight as I have, only to put it back on again also. He is a diabetic, now on insulin and glyburide. BP meds because diabetes has messed w/his kidneys. On pain meds and muscle relaxers everyday for back and knee pain.

My husband John and I have 10grandbabies between us. My 4 kids have 6 (3girls and 3 boys), his daughter has 4,(3girls and 1 boy). They range in age from almost 12years to 2 months. They are loving and very active. We decided in January this year that we wanted to check on this surgery. John was only interested in the lap band, and I did not know what was needed for a revision. We made an appt w/Dr Barker in Dallas. We cancelled it twice, mostly out of fear (we would not admit that though,LOL).

We met w/Dr Barker March 29th for a consult. He was very nice and informative. He was in no wat condescending. He said he did not have a problem w/John's lapband, but he felt like he was a better candidate for Lap RNY because of his co-morbidities. He said he felt like John would come off all medication after weight loss. He also said he was one of 3 surgeons on Dall-Ft Worth are that did Lap RNY revisions (now I got excited). He explained away my fears by telling me he stays away from old suture line and just makes new pouches. So we started the ball rolling.

Now telling my kids was a different matter. Yolanda, my youngest daughter (25yrs old) was made our emergency contact. She lost her mother-in-law to an Open RNY in 2003 after many complications and 6 very painful weeks and 3 fixer surgeries.  She is open to this and very understanding. She is also the mother of our 9th grandbaby (the one in the backgroung page) and our biggest supporter. Angela, my oldest daughter s not to happy, she says this is too big to do and since it means lifestyle changes, then we should be able to change our lifestyle w/o surgery and make it work. I listen and nod, and understand where she is coming from, but am going on. My boys Steven and Julian have not really asked and so far we have not said much.

 So here we GO!!!
