October 11- D-Day

Oct 22, 2006

Well, the day came.  October 11.  Everythign was going as planned except doctor was running terribly late.  Apparently, he thought it was at 9:30 but everyone else was thinking 7:30.

-Surgery started at about 10:30 and 10  minutes in the primary and secondary laprascopic camera broke.  Dr. decided to go ahead and do the surgery open.

-I woke up groggy and in an odd amount of external pain.  I finally felt down and there were a great deal of bandages on my stomach.  I still didn't get it.  I finally asked someone waht happened.  They avoided the asnwer until i saw my wife.  She was all over it and told me that hey had to open me up.

-I was put into my room and tried to sleep but it was almost impossible.

Old Profile

Oct 17, 2006

Well, I have read a lot of profiles and don't know where to start so here it goes.

My name is Bob Hale. I am 5' 6" and at my highest weighed 385 lbs!!!! I am down to 365 now and am trying to be below 360 by October 11. OCTOBER 11th is my SURGERY DATE!!!!!

OK, where was I.... oh yeah....

I am a 32 year old father of two. I have two wonderful daughters and a fantastic wife of 13 years. As much as I want to look better, I want to feel better and live a longer more productive life even more.

I never really had a significant weight problem in high school. I wrestled and had to keep my weight below 185 to avoid wrestling heavy-weight so I had to exercise but never realized my weight was an issue.

After I graduated, I met my wonderful wife in College. She was the most amazing person I had ever met. We were married a year later. My weight seemed to be a bit higher than high school (200 lbs.) but it was not a problem at that time.

As I changed jobs and became more involved in my career, my jobs started to become less physical and more sedentary. Part of my job became lunches and dinners with customers and that just fed (no pun intended) my weight issues. It wasn't until I was about 275lbs. that I actually took notice.

I tried every diet in the world. I truly believe that I have been on a diet more than I have been off a diet for most of my adult life.

My weight had ballooned to 300 lbs. by my 28th birthday. By this time I was working for a company that required me to drive about 3-4 hours a day for work in addition to traveling overseas on a regular basis (China and Taiwan mostly). At work the big joke was that I was the only person who would gain weight while over seas while everyone else lost weight while being there.

One day on my way home from a customer I was hit by a drunk driver. It was one of the most horrific experiences of my life. I was in a deep state of pain for about six months. In that time I gained another 85 pounds. Not being able to continue the drive, I took a demotion and pay cut to work for another company closer to home.

As fate would have it, one of my suppliers in the area I live needed someone to manage their Chicago operation and I was hired. This was the first company I ever worked for that recognized me for my talents and ability and that my weight wasn't a joke to be made. In fact, my boss, one day asked me if he could ask me a question. We were having drinks during my three month review and he had just given me an excellent review and a nice raise as well, and he said "Are you concerned about your weight?" "I am." He then proceeded to tell me that he truly enjoyed having me as a part of the company and was concerned for my health. He told me that he wanted to turn over the Midwest region to me in about a year and hated to imagine me not being around in a few years to enjoy it. Many people would have been offended but I was not. He meant it from the heart and we were both drinking so it was as honest as it could have been. He asked if I had ever heard of Gastric Bypass Surgery. I informed him that of course I had, as most overweight people knew what it was (Maybe not the exact specifics of it but most overweight people I know are aware of surgical options.) but I had never had an insurance company that would cover it. He told me to call our corporate benefits manager and he could check. Turned out that our insurance did cover it.

However, it required a 12 month supervised medical plan with a dietician. I committed myself to it and said if it takes 12 months to get approval then so be it. I had an excellent group to deal with at ST. Margarets Hospital in Dyer Indiana. Dr. Cahill is my Surgeon and Dr. Guthrie the Internal Medicine Doctor. What has really made the difference though has been the office staff. Roseann in reception to the most accommodating and helpful person you are ever likely to meet. Nancy is the head of the nursing staff and through her and the rest of the staffs efforts, you NEVER feel out of place there…EVER. The whole place is set up for overweight people and not 20-30 lbs overweight, they are equipped for people up to 500 lbs. or more. The waiting room always has ice water and large comfortable seats. The offices also have comfortable and large seats. Even the scale is made to stepping onto instead of balancing on some 1 foot block or stepping up 6 inches onto a platform. In other words they are truly in tune to what overweight people need to feel comfortable.

Well instead of making me wait the whole 12 months, i reavied approval after 6!!!!!!

MY SURGERY DATE IS OCTOBER 11th!!!! I will post shortly after and try to keep this up to date.
