Now 5 years post surgery and at goal weight -2. Life is good.

Well, it's been a little over two years since my surgery. I am happy to report that I am still doing well. However, I have gained 15 lbs back since my maximum loss. I am still 135 lbs less than I used to be and this a great thing. I am somewhat frustrated since I want to lose 10 lbs and I can't seem to shake it. It does not seem to matter what I eat or what I do, my weight stays very constant within 1 or 2 punds. I guess I should just be happy since since most folks would die to be in that posistion. Having gastric bypass is still the single best thing I have ever done.

Well, I am gald to say that I am doing great! I had surgery on May 16, 2005.I had a very good surgery and everything went very well except my time in recovery. They had some problems getting my subclavian IV going the right direction, so it was lots of x-rays and waiting. But, the IV finally cooperated and I was off to my room. To this day I am still amazed at how well everything went. I had very minimal pain during the whole process. Most of my pain was associated with getting up out of bed and getting back in. even while I was walking, my pain was very minimal. I had to throw away my bottle of pain pills after using only 5. I didn't need them anymore. My recovery has gone perfect. I have had no problems with protein drinks or any foods that I have eaten post op. I have never thrown up (yet) although I am sure I was close a couple of times from eating too much. I am amazed what a little amount of food it takes to fill me up. I have discovered that some foods fill me up in no time. I made some ham salad the other day and let me tell you, exactly one ounce of that stuff is all I can eat; It fills me up quick. I have also eaten some fish (which tastes much better these days) and it does the same thing and the fullness lasts for a long time. So, needless to say, I need to be careful when I eat those foods. I have been post op now for 4 weeks. I have a very hard time not jumping on the scale every day. I am trying to break that habit, but so far, have been unsuccessful. Some days I feel like I struggle to get enough protein. Since I am not hungry, I forget to eat most of the time and then I get busy and I forget all about food. It is a nice feeling compared to when I used to think about food 24/7. My energy level is way up now compared to what it used to be and that has allowed me to walk 5-7 miles a day. I began this journey @ 315 lbs with a BMI of 48. As of this morning I am down to 265 lbs with a BMI of 40. That is a loss of 50 lbs so far. I have also lost several inches in several places and this just makes my day. I know some of my fellow bariatric patients have had rough times during their surgery and post op lives. I am so blessed to be in the position I am in. So far, I have not had one single complication. I still think they should come up with a different device than the JP drain. Having that thing removed was and probably will always be the weirdest feeling I have ever experienced. It felt like there was a snake in my abdomen. I want to also thank Dr. Snyder and his awesome staff. They are truly wonderful people and they are the best medical staff I have ever been associated with. I could not have done this wothout them and I feel as if their team has given me a new lease on life. The same goes for the nursing staff at Rose medical. I can not speak for anyone else, but the nurses I had went above and beyond their duty for me. I was treated with the utmost respect and care. And finally, to all the bariatric volunteers that stopped by to see me while I was in the hospital- THANKS! You all made my day and made me feel like it was all worthwhile on the very first day. I will try and update this as often as I can. As you can tell since it has been 4 weeks since surgery, I am very busy. I work full time plus I am in college full time. Doesn't leave me much time. But, remember, I will be thinking of all my past and future bariatric companions.
