2 month weigh in...

Sep 05, 2007

It's been a pretty hectic month!  I've been back to work for a few weeks now (only took 2 off for the surgery), and am getting back into the swing of things.

Hubby and I took a weekend trip last month to Boston, and we had a blast.  We took a whale watching tour and I got a couple of good pix.  We drove up to Wells Beach, Maine, and hung out for a while.  What a great place!  We stopped in Salem, too, to buy souvenirs for my bro and sis.

I had a job interview earlier today for a higher paying job, and I think I did OK.  I stopped at the surgeon's office on the way back home and got weighed.  I'm now down to 396 from 431, and that's just in two months.  I'm just now starting to feel like I have enough energy to do some additional walking, so my hubby and I are doing that in the evenings, when it's cooler.  We're also looking at buying bicycles, but that won't be until next spring.

We're heading off to New Orleans for another long weekend in a couple of weeks, and I've got my grandmother's 90th birthday to look forward to.  Neither she nor my dad have seen me since I've had the surgery, so I'm curious to see what their reactions will be.  Friends at work have told me that they can see a difference, especially in my face.

I started back to college on Aug. 20, and so far, I'm enjoying the online classes.  I hope to be finished before my 40th birthday, which is March 2009.  We'll see (keeping my fingers crossed!)

One month post-op...

Aug 07, 2007

I went to the doctor's office for my one month weigh-in.  I've only lost another 3.5 lbs.  The nurse said not to be discouraged, and not to obsess on what she called "the numbers game" this early on.  26.5 lbs in the first month isn't too bad for a start!

I am disappointed that I didn't lose more, but I figure it evens out.  I didn't anticipate losing so much between my surgery and my post-op appointment, so I guess I'm even!

I'm still having some trouble with one spot on the incision...the little bugger just does not want to close!  It keeps filling up with green stuff (EWWW!).  The nurse said to just let it scab over and heal from the inside out.  So that's what I'm doing.

I've also had some trouble with dry skin on my abdomen and around the incision, but that was from a reaction to the surgical strips that bound the incision together.  A little bit of lotrimin lotion cleared it up pretty quickly.  I've been trying regular lotion on my abdomen to help with the dry skin but it's not helping much.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them!

School, school, school....

Aug 01, 2007

Well, folks, it's official!  My diploma came in the mail last week.  I am officially the recipient of an Associate of Science degree in Business Administration!  Woo hoo!  And with honors, too....how'd that happen?!!  And it's only been 21 years since I graduated high school, so I'm proof that it's never too late to go back to school!

I received my welcome letter from Ellis College on Tuesday of this week, as well.  I start back to school on August 20 to earn my Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resource Management and Psychology.  I'm pretty excited about this!  I'm in the middle of trying to plan out the courses I need to take and in what order I'm going to take them.

I can't wait to get back into the swing of being a student again.

It's a sign!

I pulled on a pair of stretch pants that were a couple sizes smaller than I normally wear, and they weren't as tight as the were before!

This is too cool!  I can't wait until I can get into a pair of jeans that have a zipper!

Back to work I go!!!

Jul 23, 2007

Today is my first day back at work.  I'm actually pretty thankful that I'm here, because I was going nuts at home doing little to nothing!

I realized that if I ever won the lottery that I would never be able to sit home and live the life of luxury and do nothing all day.  I'd have to do something outside the house like volunteer somewhere or something like that.

Everyone here in the office has been super nice, asking me how I'm doing and if there's anything they can do for me.  I'm just sitting here going through my emails (all 139 of them!) and trying to catch up on the last two weeks' worth of gossip and events that happened.

I also started Stage 3 of the eating plan, so I can now have blenderized foods (mildly chunky).  My new best friends are mashed potatoes!  Yay!

"Date" day...

Jul 21, 2007

There was a block party on our block today.

My hubby and I decided not to participate, because he knew that I wouldn't be able to eat anything that was served.  I told him I was OK with it, but he decided that we needed to just have a day to ourselves....a "date" day.

We went and had breakfast out - well, he did.  I had an instant breakfast drink.  We ran a few errands and then drove to Ikea in South Philly to pick up some storage boxes for our bedroom.  We ended up with the boxes, an ottoman, and a bookshelf, plus a bunch of other little storage items.

We stopped in a Chinese restaurant for lunch and I was able to eat some egg drop soup, and I got some steamed chicken and broccoli to take home and put through the blender.

We went to the movies and saw "Evan Almighty."  It was OK, but not nearly as good as the first one.

We went to Wal-Mart and picked up a few items, and even with all of this running around, I wasn't that tired.  Normally, I would have been exhausted after finishing up at Ikea, but I still felt pretty good after all that.

My first real outing!

Jul 19, 2007

I actually went out today!  I drove down to Delaware to meet my sister to go see the new Harry Potter movie.

It's the first time that I've driven any distance since the surgery.  I did fine.  The movie was OK, but not one of the better ones.  I'm now waiting for the book to arrive.

Post-Op Appointment...

Jul 17, 2007

Wow!  What a day!

I went for my follow-up appointment with the surgeon and to visit the nutritionist.

I've already lost 23 lbs!!!!  I wasn't expecting that much!

The surgeon said that the redness under the tape was a yeast infection, not an allergy.  He recommended Lotrimin lotion for it.  He said that I was progressing nicely with the healing and that I didn't need to come back for another 6 months, unless I wanted to meet with the nutritionist or get weighed in.

I talked to the nutritionist and told him all of the foods that I'd experimented with.  He said that I was on track with the food and what I was eating and to keep up the good work.

I also went to see my primary physician just so she could get an idea of how I was doing, too.  She's been one of my biggest cheerleaders regarding having the surgery done, and she's really excited to monitor my progress now that I've had it.  She's waiting for the day I come in and actually allow the nurses to put me on the scales to get weighed!

Today was a good day!

Taking it easy...

Jul 13, 2007

Today I'm one week post-op.  I don't feel any different, just a little uncomfortable.  I'm having trouble sleeping in my bed.  I hate sleeping on my back and I can't seem to get comfortable whether I'm sitting or laying down.

I'm on full liquids, and seem to be tolerating everything OK.  I had a little trouble with one of my soups earlier this week.  Forgot to take the Beano, and ended up with serious pains!  I'm OK now, but I learned my lesson.  Beano drops go in everything I eat!

My sister is coming for a visit today.  We're having a little Harry Potter festival...watching the first four movies before we see the fifth one.  We're planning that for when I'm up and moving around a little better.

My incision is itching.  The skin under the tapes is getting red.  I wonder if I have an allergy to the tape?

I'm back home!

Jul 08, 2007

Well, I'm back home.

The surgery was Friday and everyone (the doctors and nurses) said that everything went better than they expected.

I was up and out of bed the day of the surgery.  I didn't go far...just a couple steps to a chair for a little while.  The next day, I was up and moving around a bit more.  I got moved to a different room on Saturday afternoon and was able to do a lap around the nurse's station!

My hubby and mother-in-law came to bring me home Sunday afternoon, and now I'm here.  Just wanted to send a short post to let everyone know I was doing OK.  I'm going to bed now!
