My story: well, I don't know what to say. I was healthy and active as a young person. I was never really overweight until I had my second child 17 years ago. He was very large (11.4 pounds). Almost immediately, and well maybe before, my ex was cheating on me. He left soon afterward and I sank into a huge depression. Over time I got better but was too busy raising two small kids to take care of myself. When my son was about 6 I met my current husband, he's wonderful! Not long after that we quit smoking and more weight piled on.
I have tried many diets and such. After each attempt, more weight is on than when I started. Sound familiar?
About 1 1/2 years ago I started having problems. I went to the doctor and found out I had a prolapsed uterus. So far, it's not as bad as it could be but it's getting worse. My doctor referred me to specialist who agreed that I had this problem but told me I was too fat for him to help me. That's when I got serious about this surgery.
I saw a surgeon who said I was a good candidate, but low and behold, my husbands employer had an exclusion on our HMO policy. We started gathering information for an appeal when we discovered there was also a PPO policy with another carrier with no exclusion. We started our new policy on 01/01/07 and I began my 6-month supervised diet on 01/04/07. I had my first appointment with the surgeon this morning. He says that even though my BMI is high, otherwise I'm in good health and seem like a good candidate. I have some more tests and a psych eval to complete, but he said that if my psych eval goes well and my insurance approves, I'll be doing this!
