7 weeks out almost

May 28, 2008

Friday will be 7 weeks out.......and I am doing great.  I feel good, but the weightloss is SLOWWWWW.....atleast for my taste.  I wish it were  a whole lot faster however I didnt gain it overnight, and I guess it shouldnt fall off over night either...........anyhow,  I have only had a couple of issues with eating and feeling sick, and I suppose that I must have overdid it or ate something that just didnt agree with me.  I notice now that when that happens I get the hiccups really bad!

Life after surgery

Apr 19, 2008

Well, I did it, and now, I am 9 days out and life is good.  I have to be honest about my experience and say it was at times good and at times bad.  So here is the story.

I went into the hospital on Friday 11, 2008 and at 2pm I underwent Open Roux en Y  gastric bypass surgery.  I had 4 IV's started because my veins at this point in my life suck!  I weighed 241 right before surgery.  I am 5'3".  When I got back up to my room, I wasnt feeling too bad, although I had a NG tube down my nose into my new stomach, and that wasnt great.  I got ice chips and they really helped as my mouth was extremely dry.  I was on a morphine pump and so comfort level was good.  I received shots of heprin on a 6 hour basis...I believe.  My sugar level really spiked after surgery and so I had to receive insulin for most of the time I was there.  The Saturday after surgery, I had my cath removed, and then a few hours later, I had my NG tube removed.

I was only allowed Ice chips up until the day I left the hospital.  Then they brought me broth and juice.   I left the hospital on Sunday evening.   I had done well as the night of surgery at 2 in the morning...12 hours after my open surgery, I was up and walking the hall.  It definetely helped me to walk.  Although I didnt have all the gas that you have with a lap surgery,  it felt like it was there because the incision is extremely painful.

When I got home, the pain was pretty severe.   Tylenol wasnt doing it for me.  And I think I over did the tylenol on monday night because I had somewhat of a dumping symdrome that night and had to splash cold water on my face for 30 mins.  At this point, the thought of hurling was awful, because coughing, laughing any kind of movement hurt my chest and upper abdomen.

Eating has been strange for me as the thinner liquids do not go down as well for me as thicker things such as yogurt and cottage cheese, and egg.  I have been able to eat without much trouble, which scares me.  Also drinking is very easy most of the time as well.  I feel scared that I am not going to lose the weight because of this, and have felt very swollen and fat!

Thursday night, I ended up in the ER because I was having so much pain.  They thought I had a blood clot in my lungs.  So back in went the IV's and morphine and I came home ok, but able to sleep a very good nights rest.  They prescribed a liquid vicodin which has been wonderful.
They also weighed me that night and I had already come down 8lbs.  This was less than a week after surgery.  So I am thinking things are going well.  It is almost too easy.  I am scared about that.   Its nice if it will come off this easy....but just a little scary because I have tried and tried and failed soooooooo many times.

Well thats pretty much my story.   Almost too good to be true.  Only pain to go through, and one time almost getting sick.  But otherwise, things are great!

Oh though I have to admit, I do still get hungry, and so my surgery hasnt fixed that for me. but, I can be satisfied with very little food.  This first week was a trial.  As I did feel like oh Goodness what have I done, life will never be the same.  But when I got past that, I realize that this is by far the best thing i have ever done for myself......EVER.
