I was the fat kid. "Butterball" "Michelle the Whale" (seriously...are you so stupid that you didn't realize that DOESN'T rhyme?) "Buffalo Butt".  you name it, I'm sure I've heard it. So my first "diet" was at 8 years old.  My parents signed my brother and I up to lose weight on nutri-system.  He was 16.  I lost about 21 pounds and we moved...quit diet number one.  I never quite figured out that I wasn't the fat girl at that point. It was already "too late" for my brain.  I was fat, so I ate. I have been on diet after diet, after diet, after diet...you get the idea.  In junior high there was slim fast, then the tofu shake diet, then low fat, then nutri-system again in my junior year.  I got down to 153, quit before I reached goal and then gained it all back my senior year. Then there was the brief and unfortunate (week?) on the cabbage soup diet (gross!). Let's not even go there.  I did Atkin's at 21 and lost 70 pounds, then got gallstones and pancreatis and lost 10 more and quit per doctor's orders.  I gained that back over the next 6-8 months, plus 65 more over the next couple years.  At 27, when my son was 2, I was up to 326.  That is when I was diagnosed with Diabetes, and a completely useless Thyroid.  I lost about 75 pounds and have played with 25 of that for the past few years through weight watchers (quit twice) and other Low carb experiments (Did you know that if you eat pork, beef, and cheese all day you don't lose weight?  No matter how many carbs you don't eat!). So I'm here...a 34 year old career yo-yo dieter with type II diabetes (now on insulin), a broken thyroid, and a ten year old son who really wants me to go mountain biking.

That was my past and this is my future.  My surgeon is Dr. Garth Davis of the Davis Clinic in Houston, Texas. I have a RNY scheduled for May 31, 2011.  I am so excited!  My personal goal is to lose 28 pounds by pre-op on May 17, 2011.  My first nutrition class was February 22, 2011. I was approve by BCBS the week the new diet requirement went into effect.  Luckily I'm such a dieter, I had plenty of history to give them, so we sent of the paperwork two business days before the change. I got approved the following Thursday in less than a week. I've had it pretty easy so far.  My pre-pre-op weight loss has been great, despite being put on insulin the same day it started.  I'm optimistic and ready for the next chapter of my life.

So this is me. I a 34 year old single mom, with an amazing life, supportive friends and family, and desire to live freely!  I am so ready for this.  Life is not a dress rehearsal, well not anymore.
