Home from Hospital

Feb 18, 2009

Well, I am home from the hospital today. I had my surgery on Monday.  Everything is going great.  Much better than I had expected.  The pain has not been too bad...I was taking my pain pump in the hospital.  Being a nurse I know to keep ahead of the pain, so the little button was my good friend.  I was up Monday night walking the halls with no problem.  I have had many surgeries previously (laproscopic for endometriosis, gall bladder removed, 2 c-sections, and a hysterectomy).  This surgery has been the easiest as far as getting up and about afterwards.  The staff at Sentara Careplex were all wonderful.  I was very impressed with them. They all genuinely seemed to take an interest and explained everything in advance.  I was never rushed.  Dr. Terracina and Susie are both fabulous.  I ended up having to stay an extra night because I spiked a fever of 101.5.  I had a chest xray and it was normal.  The leak test yesterday wasn't too bad.  I was scared that I would get sick from it since I had only had ice chips.  I was expecting the worst, so I was happy that I didn't get sick.  The test turned out fine as well.  I was given my first protein shake...Champion Cookies and Cream.  It was actually pretty good...It reminded me of Cookie Crisp cereal.  I had the Banana Scream shake today.  I was good too, but I couldn't finish it...too much banana for me.  I am so excited words can't begin to explain what I am feeling.  I just know this is a new start to my life and it is what I make of it.  I am in control and I am chosing how I am going to live.  I'm so grateful for my husband.  He is awesome helping out with the girls.  He has taken the week off to be here for me and help out.  He's also doing a great job cleaning up the house.  We had gone out of town this past weekend and the house was kinda a mess when we left...ugh.  My surgery was the next morning when we came home so we didn't have time to clean up.  Poor Tom was also sick all weekend with the flu...I felt so bad!  He's feeling better now and has been so great to me...but he always has been.  My friends and coworkers always roll their eyes when I talk about what all he does for me.  I'm truely blessed.  I'm not going to weigh myself until I go for my post-op appointment on March 2nd.  For me its not so much about my actual weight, but how I feel.  I've never been one to weigh myself anyways. I hope everything keeps going as well as it has so far.  I'm sure I will have a bad day, but I really plan on doing things the right way.
