strongwilled
Once upon a time I was thin and in good health, except for smoking like a freight train. I was about 29, and had really been "underweight", according to my dr, by about 20 lbs. We were looking for ways to help me gain weight. I was 2 times divorced and had met a new someone who promised to help me with the weight gain in a healthy way. 1 year later we married and I had put on the 20 lbs, + 10 extra to boot. I stayed that way for about a year and decided to quit smoking. I gained 120 lbs in 3 months! I couldn't believe it. I'm a nurse, I was doing something healthy with my body, and this horrible thing happens! My doctor said that even if I laid in bed all day eating bon-bons, I couldn't have gained that weight, so something medically had to be wrong. After many months of labs, and no answers, I decided to switch drs. My first visit, labs were then done again, and within 1 week I found out that I had type 2 diabetes, and had been that way for years, apparently my old fashioned dr didn't pay attention to that particular lab, or chose not to deal with it . My new dr said that I should lose weight and the diabetes would go away. Needless to say, YEARS of yo-yo dieting, and many meds later, and I have co-workers that are having a new bariatric surgery that is helping them in amazing ways. Of course, skeptical at first, I worry about the malabsorption of RNY, and the foreign object containment of the lap band. They explain to me that these are not concerns, but that I should call the bariatric surgeon at our hospital and start researching on the internet. I started the research first and decided that I would either have the realize band or sleeve gastrectomy. After speaking with my surgeon, Dr Robert Cooper, of Seymour, IN, I decided on the sleeve, and embarked on a journey that is surely gonna change my life in good ways. I had surgery on 9/30/09, and the story continues.........
