6 Month Update!

Dec 17, 2013

Well on December 10th I was 6 months post op.  Things are going really well so far.  My highest weight was 343 that I recorded but I imagine that I was a little higher than that.  I am now down 122 pounds from my highest weight and down 85 since surgery.  I am able to eat pretty much what I want to (within reason) and the only dumping symptoms I get are hot flashes.  My bloodwork was pretty good. I am low on my Vitamin D and we are doing a 12 week supplement to get that up and my potassium and magnesium that were low the last time are back up to normal.  And... my cholesterol was flagged as LOW and my blood pressure was great without meds.  I was still experiencing some acid reflux and she said I can try to go of the meds again and see how it goes.  I started this process at a sz. 28 pant and 4x shirts. I am now down to 16 pants and 1x shirts and weigh 221.  So far so good!!!!

3 month surgiversary

Sep 10, 2013

Well today I am 3 months post op.  I had my Rny on 6/10/13.  I started this process at 343 (or so) and today I am down to 255, 51 pounds down since surgery.  I am feeling good, struggling to get in the calcium throughout the day.  I also struggle to get enough fluids in.  Protein is doing ok, I think I get around 60-70 grams a day.  40 pounds to go until my first goal of 215!

Post Surgery Update

Aug 01, 2013

Well on the advise of my surgeon, I ended up getting the Rny surgery instead of the sleeve.  He was extremely concerned about the severity of my acid reflux and suggested Rny would be the best surgery for me.  It was a very difficult decision for me.  I had surgery on June 10, 2013 and I am currently 7 weeks out.  I started out at 323 for my pre-op diet, and lost down to 306 the day of surgery.  As of today I am now 271, down 35 pounds since surgery.  I had some complications from surgery but feeling good, I went back to work 2 weeks post up.  I now feel that I am about back to my normal energy level before surgery and getting better.  My husband had the sleeve surgery in January and has been extremely helpful and supportive.

my surgery and acid reflux

Jan 22, 2013

When they did the upper GI as a pre-op test they found severe acid reflux up to my collar bones.  He said they didn't see a hernia.  Of course, the nurse that called said that he wants me to consider the bypass due to the reflux.  I scheduled a time to meet with him about it, and in the meantime I started looking into the posts on here concerning reflux.

I met with him on Friday about the surgery options and reflux.  I was pretty against doing the bypass.  I do NOT want my intestines re-routed,  I don't want to loose my pyloric valve, and I don't want to have mal-absorption.  It seems to be such a crap shoot as to who's reflux gets better and who's gets worse!

He warned me that the best case scenario is that my reflux stays the same.  I currently take 20mg of Prilosec and have VERY little reflux symptoms at this point, and to tell the truth I don't watch what I'm eating to help the reflux or when I eat before I go to bed.  He said I may have to increase the dose which has little long term problems.  Or, it could get so bad that I have to revise to the bypass.  He said the revision from sleeve to bypass comes with its own complications.

He said he will do the sleeve, but wanted to warn me of what could happen.  He said there is a very low occurrence of cancer with the reflux and that was my #1 concern.  He did say they will look hard for a hernia, just in case that was causing the problem and didn't show up on the upper GI.  They are also going to add a few stitches to help prevent one later.  He does a 40f and I'm hoping since its on the larger side, it reduces the reflux.

So, here we go.  My husband is scheduled for the sleeve surgery on Jan 28th and mine will most likely be in March or April.

Consultation with the doctor

Nov 02, 2012

Today was my consultation with the doctor for the WLS.  I also met with the dietitian today.  I now start my 3 months of supervised diet.  Whew I'm a little nervous now!  I scheduled the bariatric radiology and the psych eval today also.  I have already lost around 10 pounds from when my DH went to his consult and dietitian and I went along to listen.  I figured I may as well start working on things too!  Here's to the official start of the journey!

The Beginning

Oct 01, 2012

Well this is my journey to a healthier and happier me.  I started a new job and the insurance is great.  My husband started doing some research and found out that it covers WLS.  He looked around and found that we have a great surgeon in our area and made an appointment.  I wanted to go to the informational seminar with him, not only to support him, but also to find out some information on my own.  The seminar was very helpful and when I left I thought I would want the lapband.  I have had several surgeries in the past and wasn't super excited about another, but its something that needs to be done.  I wanted to choose the least invasive option.  I went along with Ken to the consult with the MD and asked him a few questions I had for myself while I was there.  He suggested the sleeve would be the best option for me.  So, here I am.  I have my own consult with the doctor and my first dietitian meeting on Nov. 2.  I appreciate everyone on this website giving a candid look into the WLS process.  It has been so helpful!
