I have pretty much been overweight my whole life. I have a twin sister but she has not had that problem. She was pretty much very active and able to stay fit. She did gain some after the birth of her daughter, but in last year been able to lose a good amount of weight the "old fashion" way. I was wanting to have the RNY approximately 10 years ago, but changed my mind because the odds for risks were very high at the time and of course, they were all open surgeries at the time. I decided I was not willing to take that risk at the time. My son was only a few years old at the time and I was not willing to take that chance. A friend of mine from work was talking about having the Lap Band performed and I thought now may be a good time for me to look into this procedure. I made arrangements and went to a meeting to get information. I had planned on having the Lap Band but once I talked with the doctor and had my psych eval the doctor talked with me and we decided that the lap RNY would be the best for me. So from the start of the decision to do the surgery to the date of surgery it was approximately 3 months. I am not saying that there were not any hard times before, during, or after. And that there will not be anymore hurdles but I will say that I am glad that I finally did this for myself and my family. I know I was not ready for it 10 years ago, but I was now. And if I had to do it again-I would. It definately was my "NEW BIRTHDAY!"
I have gotten my family a membership at the YMCA that we enjoy together on a regular basis. And now I can do so much more with my son and family then I could ever do before without being tired or sick or need a cane to walk around because my knees hurt. And I am looking forward to be able to do more and more as I lose more and more.
