Hunger on a liquid diet

Nov 05, 2013

I was really surprised how hungry I've been since surgery. I'm not sure it's technically hunger, it might be gas. However, it feels the same way hunger used to feel, and I still REALLY have head hunger, so there we are. There is a stupid Wendy's commercial that is just TORTURING me. It's for the pretzel bread pub chicken sandwich, or something like that. It has melted cheese on top, and a piece of muenster on the bottom, and looks like it's spicy chicken. It's like Wendy's waited until they knew I couldn't have their stuff to launch an ad campaign for everything I love.

I know I'm supposed to be on clear liquids, but I absolutely can not tolerate whey protein isolate. It snots up the back of my throat and I can't get the rotten baby food smell out of my head for a day. The Jay Robb egg protein wasn't so bad, but I feel like it'd be better with some ice ground up like a milk shake. I've been drinking the EAS AdvantEDGE shakes, which I used to love and am quickly getting really, REALLY sick of. They're so thick, and for some reason, now they remind me of a Barium Swallow test. Ick.

My lovely, wonderufl husband has been doing everything he can to make things easier on me. For his own food, he has started buying only things that I hate. Yesterday he had tilapia and swiss cheese. Today, he's having corn beef and sauerkraut. He's so sweet! He is also getting excited for when I eventually get onto ground up foods, and thinking up recipes for me. He really is a treasure.

It's done!

Oct 31, 2013

I've made it through surgery and have been discharged early from the hospital! I am REALLY struggling with protein. The doctor usually has patients on a clear liquid whey protein isolate diet for 14 days after surgery, but I am hardly able to get any down at all. I feel as though I'm being overdramatic when I say that it makes me gag, but it really does! The smell is so hard to overcome in Isopure and Nectar, and as soon as I take a sip, I get this snotty mucus down the back of my throat and tongue. I'm going to try the Unjury tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, I'm going to have to skip the clear liquid stage. I already discussed this with the doctor. I know that pre surgery, I tolerated EAS AdvantEDGE premixed shakes with soy protein isolate VERY WELL, and we'll give those a shot as well as the Jay Robb Egg White protein. Luckily, I'm not struggling with my hydration, which is good! I managed to keep an entire cup of sugar free jello down today, so that's something.

I'm just glad the whole ordeal is over and I can start my new, skinny life!

Two more days.

Oct 27, 2013

My surgery has been moved forward to October 29th. I started my clear liquid pre-op diet, which is THANKFULLY only two days. I drove from Clarksville to Franklin (about 70 miles) to find a Vitamin Shoppe that had the unflavored Isopure Zero Carb powder. The nutritionist at Dr. Houston's office said I should still try to get about 60 g of protein during this clear liquid pre-op phase. We got home with our unflavored Isopure powder, my husband mixed some up with my Kroger Brand Mio drink flavoring and it was DISGUSTING! I couldn't even choke it down. I tried again this morning, still HORRENDOUS! I dried diluting it further with more of the flavored water, but no luck. The flavor of the whey stuck to the back of my tongue, my throat, and got into my sinuses. Now, every time I cough, I taste that whey. *ack ack ack!* I tried doing the minimum amount a tablespoon (1/4 of a scoop) in about a cup of chicken broth with some pepper and hot sauce, and I managed to get that down. I am REALLY hoping it's just the Isopure powder that I hate, and that the Nectar and Unjury won't be so disgusting! We ordered some Roadside Lemonade from the Vitamin Shoppe in Franklin (it was 50% off), and my lovely mother ordered my a sample pack of Unjury. This is starting to look like it's going to be a VERY difficult two weeks (clear liquid stage post-op).

I'm getting a VSG!!!

Sep 26, 2013

I met with my surgeon yesterday. He explained that he didn't think the DS was a good option for me. After a great deal of discussion, Dr. Houston said that if were his daughter, he would strongly recommend that I get the VSG. I was really concerned because I had never heard of a VSG being success in people who are as big as I am. However, my doctor seemed confident, so I agreed and scheduled the surgery. After posting to the BMI over 50 board here on obesityhelp, I am feeling SO MUCH more confident in my decision. I know I've got it in me to succeed using the VSG as a tool.

Surgery is scheduled for October 30th. This is really happening!

Got RNY approval!!!

Sep 02, 2013

On Friday, I was approved for an RNY after the first letter. I really can't thank the people at the Centennial Treatment for Obesity enough for making this so easy on me. My appointment with Dr. Houston and the Pre-Op class is on 9/24 and I am so excited! I'm really looking forward to talking with Dr. Houston. The more I think about it, the more I think the DS is going to be the procedure for me, rather than the RNY. Still, I will discuss both procedures with the surgeon and listen to his recommendations. Mostly, I'm just excited to be on track to get my life back. Life is really difficult when you weigh as much as I do, and I feel like losing the weight will help with my energy level and my general outlook on life.

CAN'T WAIT!!
