100 pounds!

Jun 18, 2009

Weighed today and I'm down 100 pounds total.  36 pre op and 64 since surgery!
It feels amazing but for some reason I still think it could go faster. My docs say I'm just impatient and that things are going great. I was also told to start eating a little more and that I could eat more carbs yesterday by my dietician, not to go crazy with them but to eat a few more. Hooray!  I don't think I've ever in my life been told to eat more, funny thing is I'm still not hungry. Oh the irony.
Anyway, thanks for sharing in my great day!  I'm off to get my belly button re-pierced.

So, I've never blogged before but....

Mar 06, 2009

I had my surgery!  Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch.   It's so exciting that I can't help myself but to tell everyone who will listen! Dr. Kendrick tells me everything went great during the operation.  I thought it was going to be awkward because I worked in Dr. Kendricks OR for 3 years and I know everyone. I mean who wants to be lieing naked on a table in front of a bunch of coworkers? But instead of awkward it was really comforting. I thought I would freak out but instead I was totally zen.   Afterward, in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit I had pretty severe pain for a bit, but the nurses and doctors got my pain under control and now I'm feeling pretty good considering (I mean I did just have surgery ! )  I got them to remove my urinary catheter early  and have been peeing all night.  Also I've been up for 8 walks already!  All the nurses on the floor are impressed but I'm so excited to get moving and healing that I can't sit still.
Dr. Kendricks residents just stopped to visit with me and I'm going to start my clear liquid diet this morning. I'm excited to be able to drink some water. They keep the hospital so dry!

I've worked here at Mayo for 4 years and it is so different on the patient side of things.  This experience will definately help become a better nurse and relate to my patients better.

Finally I want to thank those of you who sent messages or just kept me in their thoughts or prayers.  I'm usually not that big on leaning on others for support and I haven't really been much of an active participater on this sight (yep I'm a lurker) but knowing that there are so many people on this site that care made me feel at ease. You guys are angels.

Let the weight loss begin!
