I've gained 10-15 pounds per year since high school. I've lost in big chunks up to 80 pounds in one effort only to gain it back again with gusto.   I have always been 'healthy' but lately the side effects are catching up with me and I'm tired of losing ten pounds and gaining back 15.

I've been researching WLS and am using this year as preparation for surgery in early 2008.  I'll be 40 next August and I refuse to be any more unhealthy than I am today.    I did personally know someone who died after the surgery and so the risks are very real to me, so this is a big decision.

My employers health insurance specifically denies the surgery as a covered treatment (which gets under my skin) so I'll be financing this myself.  While I am irked about the short sightedness of insurance companies (and the companies that purchase these plans) I'm thankful I don't have to deal with that aspect of this process.  This will be a decision between my doctor and me.

I'm looking forward to being more active, looking better in clothes, not being the "fat lady" that no one wants to sit with on the bus, and maybe even dating!?

Wish me luck and stay tuned!  I'm planning on going to Greece for my 40th birthday - maybe I'll be less of me then!
