In high school I always thought I was "fat." Looking back I want to smack myself for not appreciating my athletic body, curves and all. I would love to be sporting those 160lbs instead of that and then another 70. But my sophomore year of HS I started the birth control patch and packed on 15-20 lbs in almost a year. To add to this cruelty, it was also highly ineffective for me and in our junior year my then boyfriend of 2 years (now husband) and I found out that we were expecting. From there my weight climbed steadily. Even after I gave birth to our daughter. After she was born, my thyroid finally followed after every member of my mother's side and decided it was done for. I have hypothyroidism, Hoshimoto's, and a benign tumor on my thyroid. It doesn't like to do any work, lazy thing.
At my highest I weighed 273. It was in November 2011 at 22 years old, a couple of weeks before I fell pregnant a second time (literally the day we decided to wait a year before starting the fertility meds the Dr said would be absolutely necessary). During this pregnancy, thanks to good ol' hCG and borrowing my son's thyroxin, I actually lost 30 lbs. After he was born in August 2012 I knew that I did not want him to remember me as this overweight, camera fearing, insecure, woman. When he was 5 weeks old, I had to have a cholecystectomy and after reading some people's experiences, I had hoped to lose a little bit of weight afterwards. No such luck. It was time for something radical after all of my failed diet and exercise programs over the years. In April 2013 I sat down for my first nutrition class and the intro into SAMMC's weight loss surgery. I finished everything but a support group by my May vacation and completed that right after my return in June. On July 5th I met with my surgeon and the date is set- July 17th! I am ready for this... ALL of it. This time next year, I hope to weigh the same as that body I looked at disdainfully in high school and after that, I'll even make 16 year old me proud.
