Question:
Did anyone out there have hypothyroidism have trouble losing weight post op?

I was just wondering if the weight came off slower due to thyroid problems? How much did you lose?    — Allison T. (posted on March 14, 2002)

If you are taking thyroid pills, it shouldn't make any difference. Your doctor should be checking you for your thyroid levels and adjusting the medication, if necessary.

I am a little over 3 months post op and I have lost 74 lbs, which is about half way to goal for me. I am hypothyroid (I take Levoxyl/Synthroid) and I also have PCOS. (not taking my Glucophage) So far, no problems with weight loss. Good Luck

I have hypothyroidism, PCOS and before surgery was on four shots a day of insulin plus three pills for diabetes. I am now 9&1/2 months post op, down 112 pounds (1 pound below goal!) and am off all my meds except for synthroid. I have had no problem losing at all, and think I actually lost pretty quickly! Best of luck...

I am also on synthroid and down 65 lbs. in three months. As long as our levels are checked, it shouldn't affect the weight loss. Good luck and enjoy the journey!

I've taken synthroid since 1995. I had my surgery 18 weeks ago and have lost 70 pounds. So I'd say it hasn't bothered my weight loss. However, I used to take my synthroid 6 days a week and after my last blood work, my doctor said I was getting too much and cut me down to 5 days a week. When I go to my PCP who's also an endocrinologist, I ALWAYS have him run a T3, T4 and TSH panel in addition to the blood tests that the surgeon's office wants run. That way if the levels are still too high he adjusts them down.

GOOD QUESTION! I also have hypothyroidism and like some of the other posters, I have PCOS as well and this was something I had worried about since I am still pre-op. Thank you for everyone's answers!

I have been on Synthroid since 1989 and had continually gained weight in the last 5 years even tho my levels were fine. So i was really worried that I would struggle with the weight loss. I had surgery almost 10 months ago and I am at goal! I had no trouble losing the weight or so far keeping it off. Best of luck to you.

I'm 10 days away from my surgery. I questioned my PCP was to whether I would need to continue to take Synthroid after surgery. He said yes. But based on my weight loss my dosage would be reduced over time.
