Can anyone tell me how many calories they think I should be taking in at 3.5 months post-op. Thanks for all help.    — Tammy B. (posted on July 30, 2002)

I had open RNY on 3/6/02 and just back for a check up on 7/25/02. The Dr. asked me what I was eating and I told him the types of food and that it ranged from 700-1100 cal/day. He told me to keep it in the 700-800 end. And that I make sure to eat 60-80 g of protein/day. He said he wanted me to lose as fast as I can. I've lost 85 lbs. so far. I started at 337, so I still have plenty to lose. He does not want us to use protein drinks at all once we get past the liquid diet. Part of this whole process is learning how to eat appropriately.

Good luck with that. When I do not supplement, my protein level is way low in my lab work. It is amazing what just one 30 gm. protein supplement does for my labs. Maybe you can do better than I did. Just be sure to get your lab tests done and be aware of the range for protein, etc. As my tummy pouch healed, it became more adjustable for me to eat "dense meat" such as steak cut into small pieces. The denser the protein that we put into our pouch, the more satiated we feel and for a longer time period. However, I cannot survive without my supplement. At mealtimes, I always go for the protein and the more dense, the better. My liquid supplement is very early in the day, when I am pushing my liquids & increasing my water.

You must remember that everyone is different. I am 15 mos post-op -152lbs. I dont really care for meat anymore. I still drink a protein drink to make sure my protein is in. I have have really good blood work so far. I also just had a Tummy Tuck and Breast Reduction on 07/18/02 and I cant believe how much easier it was compared to RNY, of course I weigh 152lbs. less and I am earting better. Well Good Luck. Zone Perfect has some good protein bars. Some may be to high in sugar grams for you right now. Just give them a try.

Hey there, I've been sticking with getting in between 500 and 750 calories daily and it's going well for me, I've lost 114 lbs in 6 months and my surgeon says this is right on target. Good luck to you! :)
