Question:
Is losing 10lbs. in 1 month 10 months post-op too much in one months time?

I went to my PCP yesterday. I am now 10 months post-op RNY. I've been having some problems with nausea & a little vomiting all along. I got on the scale & lost appromately 11 lbs in the one month since I'd seen him. It seems that I don't lose, don't lose, than all of a sudden I drop like 10 lbs. or so. From what I understand is nomral. My primary care Dr. had a fit. He said that is too much weight in such a short period of time to be losing this far out post-op. To date I have lost approx. 150 lbs. in about 10 months. I started out at about 304 or so. Do you agree or is he just not familiar with what is going on? Is losing 10 lbs. in a month 10 months post-op too much? I am unfortunately going in on Monday for a scope to see how my ulcer is doing that I've had since about 3 months post-op. Which they feel my be the root of my nausea etc. My PCP was talking about putting me on some cholesterol medication that also helps with absorbtion of foods & vitamins. I forget the name of it but that kind of scares me a little. He feels that I am not absorbing enough of what I should be. Plus, he is nervous about the diarrhea I have about once a day or so. After all I have been through why would I do that? Not to mention he is talking about switching my anti-depression meds. to Paxil which may cause WEIGHT GAIN he said?!! He did say he would converse with my surgeon first. BUT is this something I should be concerned with or what? Has anyone had this happen to them?    — Allison T. (posted on February 13, 2003)

hi there :) i think your right on actually, mine at first was 20 or more a month, then 15, then 10 and now its right around 10 a month and even slowwer, it just depends on alot for me now, like water intake, activity, etc. in 1 year . i lost 185, im on a plateau right now, but i know the loss will pick up again, thats how it works for me too, ill stand still then drop like lbs in what seems to be over night, then ill fluctuate too, especially during my time of the month UUUGHH! imo, its ok and it will usually slow as time goes on. :) good luck to you, :)

Your weight loss should start slowing down at this stage if you started at 304, have lost 150 and are now 154 pounds. How you are losing, nothing for a while, then a big drop, is not unusual for some post-ops. We all lose weight differently. I think it is good for your PCP to consult with the surgeon-it sounds like you have a caring PCP! Good luck

hi allison - just a quick note about the paxil , i was on effexor for a year or so , then switched to paxil , now my (different) dr. has put me on zoloft . i have gained close to 50 pds, in two and a half years . i have had acouple drs. and nurses say that the paxil , etc. will cause a weight gain . plus i read it in a paper last week , so be careful and talk to your dr. about this , cause it WILL cause weight gain . my dr. now says zoloft might be better for as for not causing this . good luck ...........

I would be more concerned with the nausea and diarrhea. Although you are post-op, when it comes to symptoms like that..even a 'normal' person would lose weight. Who wants to eat when they don't feel well and who wouldn't lose weight if they got diarrhea every day? When those issues are resolved and if you then continue to lose faster than what your SURGEON thinks is too much, I'd be concerned about that. I would also be concerned about taking meds you're not comfortable with. Are there any alternatives? Good luck.
