Question:
6 months out - will I get to goal?

HI everyone! I am (almost) 6 months out and started at 292 and now weigh 189, I wonder if this is it for me?! My weight loss has really slowed down since month 4/5. I have 50 more pounds to lose, My surgeon's assistant told me that she doesn't think that I will get to goal. My question is what can I do to get there. I need help. I am exercising, I am drinking the water, I think i need to concentrate on protien. I don't think I get enough of that. Is their a diet out there that I can follow, or would someone be willing to send me their meal plan, I need help for more than just one day. I am begining to give up hope. Im so desperate to get the last 50 off I thought I was doing well But I was told other wise at my checkup, I should have lost more. Any help would me appreciated. Thank you! — nicole79 (posted on March 15, 2003)

It amazes me that someone can lose 100 pounds in less than 6 months and a surgeon's assistant says you won't lose 50 more?? Forget about the assistant, what does the surgeon say?? Its crazy to think that you haven't lost enough. I would say that you are ahead of schedule, as you have lost 2/3rds of your weight in less than 6 months. Have you forgotten that your window is open for the next 12 months? Thats like 4 pounds a month. Yes, you can definitely do it. I certainly would not despair nor take the word of an assistant that you will not reach or surpass your goal. You know the rules-lots of protein (add a shake a day to boost your protein), cut down on snacking/carbs/sugar, up the exercise and water if needed, watch the calorie intake and it will happen for you. You have experienced an extremely rapid weight loss and cannot expect the rate to continue after 6 months. If it did, first of all, you'd be anorexic within a year. This is not a race, its a journey. Instead of being anxious or desperate as you put it, relax, and enjoy the ride. You'll get there.

I agree with Cindy-- I think you can still make your goal! Look at it this way: in 6 months you lost 2/3 of the weight to get to goal. My surgeon says that the weight loss window is a total of 18 months to 2 years-- you have at least 12 more months to go. It could be slow right now, but that may just be a plateau. If you drink water, eat protein, watch carbohydrates and excercise, I doubt you will stop losing. Even if the weight doesn't pour off, you should be able to lose more weight.
Shame on your surgeon's assistant for being such a downer. I think that you should report her to your surgeon-- 6 months is too early to make a predicition like that, and when it is such a downer it can become self-fulfilling. You need encouragement right now, and she should be giving it to you. I'm glad you wrote in, so that all of us can give it to you-- because you certainly CAN do it.
I am 3 yrs post went from size 30 to size 4 in 12 mths...Started at 288 lbs LOST 165 lbs now weigh 123 and I am 5'7". Now how I did that was 100% protein. NO CARBS. not even vegetables or fruit. I did cheat occasionally but when I ate carbs I would plateau. I also exercised minimum of 1 hour per day and many days 2 hours and for the last 20 lbs I upped it to 3 hours. I have been holding the weight loss steady for over 2 years with virtually 100% protein with a small...very small amount of carbs..veggies (never potatoe like veggies..but broccolli or cabbage veggies) I do occasionally have dessert but will trade for 100% protein the next day or additional exercise. I now exercise minimum 1 hour per day and if my weight fluctuates 2 or 3 lbs I will increase exercise until weight is gone. This surgery helps...but if you don't change your food preferences you will find yourself stalled out or Plateaued as some like to call it. If you keep doing what you've always done...you will get what you've always gotten... CHANGE

Nicole, what does the surgeon's assistant know? Who is she GOD? Really now. I am in the same boat as you. My surgery was 8-15, I am 7 mos today and down 100lbs, my goal is 150, so, i have 55lbs to go. You can lose up until 14-18 mos, who cares if its only 2-5lbs a month...on any other diet, you would have relapsed already! What are you eating, how much exercise do you do, are you drinking all your water? I didn't lose for 20 days of the last month and have lost 5lbs since March 1, so, who knows, everyones body is different. If you wanna get there, you will. But, att he same time, you need to decide if its a weight, size or a state of mind that you are really looking for at goal! Good Luck. Heather (Open RNY 8/15 - 305/205/150)
