Question:
How much sugar is too much?

I've been reading the labels at the grocery store, getting ready to do some real cooking next week and am concerned about sugar. Some things have sugar in them, and you can't always sub out. How do I determine how much sugar is in my recipe?    — YaYasMom (posted on June 20, 2003)

My surgeon said sugar should not be one of the first three ingredients. That is what I go by, and haven't dumped yet.

According to the dietician at the Wish Center who is hired by my doctor's office told us at our support group that we should not get more than 30 grams total from our food in a day. The previous poster made a good point keep the sugar out of the first three ingredients and you should not have a problem. That is what I do and have not dumped yet either. Also, remember some foods have natural sugar in them, like peas and fruits. 6+ wks post down 36#.

I agree with Robin, sugar or some form of sugar should not be in the first 3 ingredients. However, everyone's body is different. While on 30-40% if us dumo, sugar has different effects on everyone. What may effect you one day might not another. Heather(Open RNY 8-15-02 305/190/150)

In a support group I belong too, they recommend no more than 6 grams per meal as a good rule of thumb.

Thanks everyone! I was specifically looking at making some home made spaghetti sauce with ground turkey, and the tomato paste/tomato sauce both have sugar, but not in the first four ingredients (I think it's like 2G in a serving, but that serving will make an awful big pot of sauce!) Thanks again!
