Question:
My Surgeon's Comments RE: DS vs. RNY

My surgeon was part of the medical research team involved in the endorsement of RNY by NIH in 1991. I recently sent him some articles regarding DS and asked for his comments. He kindly sent me a five page article with the following handwritten comment: "The "duodenal switch" operation is more extreme than gastric bypass, often done to accomplish greater weight loss, but carries greater risk of morbidity postoperative. These pages, which are comparitive among procedures, are part of the American Society of Bariatric Surgery brochure on obesity surgery that several of us prepared and will be published by summer." I appreciate everyone's input regarding the DS. We all need to be informed of all our options and choose what's best for us based on our lifestyles and surgeon recommendations. I now feel absolutely confident in my surgeon and my choice of RNY after reading the comparisons. I will be glad to scan the article and send it as an email attachment to anyone who would like to read the surgery type comparisons if you don't want to wait until summer to get it from the ASBS. Please email me privately, off the list, and be patient as I anticipate several requests.    — [Deactivated Member] (posted on February 23, 2000)

Not to single you out, however, I think we should name our 'source' when providing info from experts. In this case, who is your surgeon? where does he/she practice?

WOW! My inbox is full! I have received NUMEROUS requests for copies of the article. Please bear with me as I am experiencing some technical difficulty with my scanner. I promise to send it as soon as possible. BTW, friends, we can find the name of everyone's surgeon (if they have him/her listed) on this site by viewing their profile - I'm not keeping some big secret! Also, my intentions are purely informational and educational. I am NOT promoting one surgery over another - I have made my choice, based on my surgeon's recommendations, my research, and my lifestyle, and am confident in it. Let's not create controversy on this site - please have your disagreements via private email. I will NOT send the article to anyone who harasses me for my choice of surgery or publicly berates other site members. That is NOT the purpose of this site and reduces the integrity of the database. Thank you!

Good answer!!! We need to keep this an informational database not a datbase full of arguments over which is best or which is not best. That is all opinions and you know what they say about those, right????

If you send me a copy of the report I could type it for us to have as information on this site. It is helpful for those who may be scanning the database. I think you are going to tire real soon of the many requests that you may get even months down the line. More people are considering WLS and exploring the alternatives. Thanks for adding this insight for us to share. Again, if I can be of help please let me know.
