Question:
Whats the word and experience out there with taking Metamucil?

Can we use Metamucil for some serious constipation issues? And are there any Iron supplements that WON'T contribute to the constipation problem? Is it a common thing to develop a lactose intolerance after a year? And more of an intolerance to fats and sugars that I was able to eat after 8 weeks out?    — Ginger M. I'm pre-op but was told NO to Metamucil. Benefiber is suppose to be safe to use and doesn't have that "gritty" taste that Metamucil does. Lactose intolerance can happen at any time whether you have had surgery or not. Do you still have your gall bladder? IF yes, that may be what is causing the lactose intolerance also. The gall bladder can also cause an intolerance to fats too. Remember if you are lactose intolerant to be sure to check ingredients for not only diary/milk but for derivatives such as whey.

I have been using Benefiber - it is easy to put into my protein shakes and coffee. I didn't want to take Metamucil or Citrucel because I can't down a whole glass at once - and I can't sip on it because it becomes thick.

Thanks, Mary. I had my gallbladder out at time of surgery. I was using skim milk after surgery, switched back and forth to soy. Then after 11 months out, I am suspecting I have a lactose intolerance. I'm looking at the Benefiber and the Metamucil and they seem to be very close in similarity. Does anyone have any idea as to the best iron to take for one who suffers from big time constipation?

The only problem i see with the metemucial is that it thickens faster than we can drink it. A lot of people take the benefiber. I don't think it thickens.

I have had severe problems with constipation. The best solution that I have found was Colon Clenz. It is an herbal formula in capsule form - the manufacturers say that it is safe to take daily. I couldn't handle the metamucil or the benefibre - I didn't like the consistency of the drink and it made me feel too full. Good luck

I'm pre op, but have Fibromyalgia and a side effect is IBS- with diahrea for over thirty years so I have to take something to help me with that. I have been trying to stay with high protein foods, since last August as I've decided to have wls , and I get constipated badly, have fissures now. For years I used Metamucil and put up with the bloated, gasy results it gave me. I was regular finally. But still almost home bound. Then in this last year I tried Citracel, then Citracel Clear Mix. The Citrcel was better than Metamucil, I had no bloating and gas with the Citracel. Then two months ago I started using Citracel Clear Mix and it is the best of all worlds. No bloating and gas pains, worked like a charm, no vile side effects. Then last week I started Benefiber, I had read on OH members who had good results with it. I have taken Benefiber, their recommended dose of 1 TBL. 3 times a day for over four days, I have had unbelieveable gas, bloating, and I can't say the Benefiber results were good, I was very disappointed. And yes it does thicken from the corn starch - check the label ingredients or their web site. I am going back to the Cetracil Clear Mix, it worked great with no ill side effects. I'm taking a lot less with much better results. I'm also researching the ingredients of Metamucil, Cetracil and Benefiber. Different strokes for different folks. Just my humble opinion.

I was told that it would coagulate faster than we can drink it and get it down where it would do some good. I've been using Benefiber quite well.

My doctor recommended Senokot or Benefiber, plus stool softeners. I'm using the Benefiber twice a day, plus taking 2 stool softeners, and I still have problems sometimes. I've seen a few posts about using Smooth Move herbal tea. This is something I am considering trying. Sorry I can't answer your other questions.

I've just started trying the Metamusil bisquits. They are quite good (considering) and have been working.

I am 15 months out and have used Benifiber and one to two stool softeners everyday for months now. It is the only thing that has helped me. I mix it in my decaf Ice Tea. I like the fact that it hasn't any taste and it mixes easily. Find what works for you. Apples are a great help also and boy, are they good this year! Lap RNY 8-28-03 down 119 lbs. Best of Luck!

Try eating 1/3 cup of a bran cereal with soy milk( i use regular milk) 2x's a day. I did not poop for 8 days once. I used an enema and then started eating this. I have been pooping great ever since. Constipation is the pits. Drink one ounce of water for every pound you weigh also. Veronica 289/191/? 7/1/03 P.S I am do not definetely know all the answers. The more I know, the more I realize I don't know. Except, the manufacturers of all these "diet" foods have all the money. Not me!!!!

I had a constipation problem and my doctor prescribed Metamucil. I had no problem with it and it worked great. I just had to drink it quick before it thickened
