Question:
what can i do for water retain. The more I drink the more weight I gain. Help me...

I am eating @ 800-900 cal. a day 40-50 grams of protein, excercising 1 hr a day, and drinking plenty of water. I had surgery 2 wks ago, and have only lost 6lbs. and keep retaining fluids. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. Why I am not losing any weight.    — kywade (posted on October 24, 2008)

Hi Kimberly, When you retain fluid you may be taking in to much sodium. You will need a good flush and how I do that is by having my water with lemon. Works wonders and I have "True Lemon" which I add to my bottled water a few times a day. You can look at their site "truelemon.com" to find where it is sold near you. Don't be discouraged, remember, slow and steady wins the race. You didn't put on the weight in two weeks and it will take time to loose it as well. Best of luck. Mary-Anne

Green Tea works wonderfully and has other benifits as well. I make sure I use decaf.

Hi! The only advice I have is to eat more protein...60 grams was recommended when I had surgery. You need it to heal. Also I hear members of support group say that when they drop the grams they stop losing weight. Wouldn't hurt to try! What have you got to lose except weight!! Also , if you are consuming alot of milk--that could add to it..I was drinking 32 oz a day and stopped losing as milk has 12 g of sugar in it..skim milk atleast does..for 8 oz..so try drinking more water or low cal stuff. I am just now up to 800 cals a day and I am 4 months out. hope this helps! hugs< kim

'Your Body's Many Cries for Water: You Are Not Sick, You Are Thirsty' by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj is an AWESOME resource. I think you're eating too few calories. Protein looks good. Just my opinion, but I've seen it many times. Dr. Bat would say chug more water to release the excess water. Drugs simply are not the answer to quickly run to. If you had surgery two weeks ago, one would expect some body trauma, right? And your body must heal from this trauma. I got Dr. Bat's book on www.half.com which is a division of Ebay. I think I only paid about $5 for it! They're normally between $15 and $20. I shop bargains! Be healthy. Ruth aka Mom Shap

I think you need to look at what you are eating closely. Depending your height and weight, you might need a few more calories. Although, if you are about my size (5'2", 175 lbs.), it's fine. You seem to be a bit low with the protein. I know I am supposed be intaking at least 60 - 80 grams of protein. This one will be easy to tell: your hair will start thinning out within a short period if you aren't getting enough protein. You also need to look at how much sodium is in your diet. It causes you to retain fluid. Another thing that pops to mind is that your definition of plenty of water and the needs of bariatric surgery may not mesh. You might not actually be intaking enough water. If none of the above apply, you might just need to take diuretics for awhile. My recommendation is to get your doctor involved. By the way, 6 pound in the two week following surgery isn't bad, particularly if you were on an IV for more than about 12 hours.

I am 3 1/2 weeks out. The first 2 weeks I retained water weight, then all of a sudden I was going to pee every 2 hours all night for 2 nights. I lost it all very quickly and am now about 25 pounds. Be patient. Deb

My answer will be different than the ones you are reading so far.. I also am having water retention issues, I am just 5 days post op. My surgeon's office has had me stop the super protein drinks and just stay on liquid nutrition including broths, jellos, popcicles, juices, etc. I will be tested for Gout or high Uric Acid..if that is the case, then a revision in my nutrition and maybe a med will be instituted. You might ask your surgeon to order a urinalysis...just to be sure. best of luck and speedy recovery Kim in Fontana

At my one-week post-op appointment my Dr. was actually surprised that I had lost as much as I had (15lbs.) She said that MOST lose very little as they tend to retain water for a good 3-4 weeks following surgery. It's just your body's way of protecting itself after such a traumatic event as surgery. Especially surgery of the digestive system! What your going through is VERY common in your situation. You WILL begin to lose, we tend to want instant results, I know I've been going rounds with myself over not loosing fast enough (31 lbs. in almost 6 weeks.) Then in times such as right now as I'm posting this and I actually think about what I'm saying right now, how insane am I? How can I even be complaining over loosing ONLY 31 lbs. in a little over a month? It will happen, just give it time. Through what I've read and learned on this site it seems that wieght loss really speeds up around the second month, so you have time, pace yourself, I know I've had to learn to myself!

If your retaining weight you can suffer from fluid overload. what goes in should always come out. To be exact atleast 30ml an hour. If your having problems you should talk to you doctor and or try a diuretic which helps you pee...nursing student thats all
