Question:
Left side pain - almost 3 months out

My surgery was on September 8th. Everything is going as expected but for the last few mornings I'm getting up with sharp pains on my left side, starting under my breast bone area. Is this something anyone else has experienced or is this not from surgery at all? I'm not sure what to do... as the day goes longer it goes away but it is really quite cripalling while it is going on.    — Kristie R. (posted on November 23, 2009)

I don't think it is from the surgery, however it could be gas. That is were it gets trapped and it is very painful. You can mention this to your primary and they can take an xray and even see the gas in the xray. Depending on what surgery you had, if your intestines are different than I would expect it to be gas, but see your doctor since you have had it for so long, you don't want to ignore a pain if you have had it that long. It just doesn't sound like a bad side effect from your surgery.

if i were you i would get checked for kidney stones...they can happen on right or left. but when i had them they give u very sharp pain, sometimes worse than others. post op we are also more prone to kidney stones because of our liquid intake. just a thought. talk to your pcp and see if they'll test you for it. another common side effect is blood in your urine. may not be a lot but when i had them my urine turned orange/red. good luck to you. hope u figure out what's going on.

These strange pains come and go forever. Some are gas,, some are heartburn, some are just random things I never figure out. As long as they go away in an hour I just let it go. If it becomes cronic I call the doctor who usually can fix it fairly easly. If the pain is severe and comes everyday check with your bypass doctor who may know a way to avoid it. i am all for avoiding pain if possible. Take care.

I am over a year out and I still get pain once in awhile on my lower left side. I have had several tests including CT scans and ultra sounds with nothing being found. I truly believe it is part of the body adjusting to the drastic changes. To eliviate any worry - I would get it checked out. It definite helped me sleep a lot better at night. Plus it does seem to be associated with gas from all the protein shakes I consume. It is hard for the body to break down protein. I hope this helps.

It is gas...! FOR SURE! It is severe gas in my case. I am 4 months out and I can barely eat anything without taking a gas-x or tums....I am so tired of having this happen. Been like this for 3 weeks now. It gets better for awhile....it is right under the breastbone and sometimes right in the pouch. No cure yet...just the otc things to help the AWFUL gas that builds up.
