Question:
*Bowel Adhesions and prolapse

hi i had open rny dec 2001 and lost a total of approx 80kg and am approx 67kg now and have developed bowel adhesions and a prolapse, has anybody else had these complications years after there surgery. This is the only stoumach surgery i have had and apparently they normally only appear after surgerys but i may be incorrect. has anyone had surgery to rectify this problem and if so how did it go. I am seeing my surgeon tommorow for my surgery date on this matter and would appreciate comment thanks...rachel    — daisy2005 (posted on August 8, 2006)

I have not had any problems with my bowel, thank God, I am 3 years post op. I have known people and heard of people that have had alot of problems with there bowels. One of my friends I meant here on OH had to have a large amount of bowels removed recently and she is 3 years post op, and another poster on OH said that she got neurothrophy and had trouble with her bowels. I am not trying to scare you, only to let you know that this is not unusual for long term post ops. We use our bowels as a stomach to chew and process our food, because our stomachs to not work the same way any more, I am having my pcp run test on me now, before any problems. I guess bowels problem is not something that the WLS surgeons do alot of studies on. I which you the best, be sure to post your journey on this site, it may help someone else with the same problems.

hi cindy thanks for your response it has made me think that yes after we lose our upper stoumach our bowel must have to work hard at processing our food maybe i should of stuck to a softer diet and never resumed normal food seriously as this makes ense as even though i have been eating slowly i have been eating hard to digest food and the human bowel isnt really made to be your upper stoumach. it would be very interesting to see if other open rny clients have had this problem as if they have maybe a softer diet is called for if it saves our bowels long term... thanks for your response

Hi Rachael, Seems like Bowel problems goes with WLS patients. I am 2 1/2 years out from RNY and this past November I had to have Emergency Bowel Surgery to remove a Blockage due to adhesions and scar tissue. I was in the hospital for 13 days and stuck in Ohio for another 3 weeks before the doctor would release me,( I was there on vacationat the time) stating that I was well enough to come home to Alabama. I lost an additional 14lbs after this surgery taking me down to 114 lbs. I am well now and beginning to pick up the weight that I lost( which was expected), I was looking like a skeleton.........The doctor's tell me that this happens with alot of patients because of the scar tissue buidup. Nothing was said to me about the food being the cause. Hope this gave you alittle help. Good Luck Cindy
