Question:
6 months out with a terrible sore throat and wondering if it is from lap band

OK, it has been 6months since my lapband and before lapband I had terrible reflux and it has really been gone since surgery. 5days ago I started with a terrible sores and pain in my throat and could not really tell my band was still working. I had a fever to 104 the first day and started an antibiotic but my throat continues to have such pain I can't swallow unless I take ibuprofen. I have wondered if anyone has heard of this? And, does anyone know the symptoms when you don't feel any restriction on eating (6ml in band) and your band could be broke? Please help me the pain is almost most to much to bear.    — bethuabgrad (posted on January 29, 2009)

If I were you, I would be getting in my DR. a sore throat doesn't seem to have anything to do with Lap Band, as I am a bander myself and no one that I know has these symptoms. We have no medical knowledge on this site, so please get to a Dr. ASAP. Susan

Beth, Hi there. You really should go see your PCP. The throat issue may not be related at all to your band and if you're having that much pain, it would be unwise to not get it checked out. Keep in mind that this is the season for Strep, etc... Keep us posted! :-)

Hi, I had Lap RNY on 7/18/2008. Did not have major throat issues until AFTER sinus surgery 10/08. Now throat is sore all of the time. Doc says sinuses drain, maybe that could be it, but I agree that you should get it checked out. It is better to take the time and get it checked out then to wonder and let it influence the quality of life you have. It never occured to me that it could be from Reflux- although I did not have severe Reflux issues. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

Sorry, not sure about the throat issue, but are we supposed to take Ibuprofen with the lap band. I thought only Tylenol. You may want to ask your Dr about that when you go get your throat checked. Are the two related...could be?

I'm no doctor, but it sounds like you may have Strep Throat. Be sure to take the antibiotics as prescribed and gargle with warm salt water. I work in a school and these are the symptoms. I have had this several times and it may 5-7 days for the throat to feel better. You may even end up with a scratchy cough. Good luck and rest! Deb

Hello Beth, your symptoms are more consistent with a viral infection, the fever and the blisters in the throat. If the blisters are white, it could be strep throat though and in this part of indiana we are seeing s lot of strep throat that has litterally knocked people on their rear ends for 5-7 days. Did your doctor do a strep test before beginning the antibiotics? if not well, sorry but a strep test now will be negative, but Continue the rest of the medication. Now, if the blisters are clear, and with the fever, as I stated earlier, it could be a virus and we are seeing a lot of viral infections too( and no antibioitc will help a viral infection). I did not say just a virus but a virus. They can be more of a pain then a bacterial infection as only, tylenol or ibuprofen is about the only things you can do, besides rest and lots of fluids. If you have been on the medication for a week or more and still feel terrible as far as the sore throat, you probably should see your PCP, and perhaps have some lab work done - especially a mononuecleosis test-- it is more then just a kissing disease. :) many times when people get strep throat their resistance is lowered adn then they also can get mono in top of the strep- not fun but does happen. anyway, hope this information helps. and do take care. I do not beleive the sore throat is not related to your lapband. DO keep drinking fluids as this in important not only for your lapband surgery but for your present health condition. And do finish your antibiotic in case it is strep- a full 10 day course is most important. wishing you mush better health soon! blessings and hugs, Cora Shrum, RN

Check out the other Question posted from the same day you posted yours. The member is having the same problem and both members that posted an answer had the same issue. Their problem was that the band had eroded into the stomach and the infection from that was coming up the throat. I would encourage you to get to your doctor ASAP!
