Question:
plateu already??

I am almost 3 weeks post op from Lap Band. I've lost around 20lbs so far, but for the past week I have not lost anything!! The scale just seems to keep bouncing up and down with the same 5 pounds. I know plateus are normal, but is it normal to have one so soon?? I'm eating what my nut says, taking my supplements, getting ALL my protein and practically all the water, and nothing. I'm getting so frustrated!! Has anybody else had a plateu this soon? Am I doing something wrong? If you have, how long did it last? Please help!!    — nyckitty (posted on March 17, 2008)

I did and have seen MANY people on here asking the same question. It is very normal, you aren't doing anything wrong at all. You just had major surgery and it takes time for your body to catch up with all the weight you have lost. It sometimes thinks you are in starvation mode and slows everything down to perserve itself. Mine lasted about 2 weeks then bam, 5 lbs gone. You are probably still losing inches. Don't fret, keep doing what you are supposed to and it will do what it's supposed to. Congrats on the weight loss so far and good luck!!

I'm 3 1/2 weeks post op from Lap Band, and have only lost 17 lbs. I lost about 1 lb. a day for 14 days, then nothing for 7 days, and then 1 lb. every other day. During the days that I did not lose anything, I was frustrated, depressed, and even a little angry. I couldn't believe I was losing so little while taking in so few calories. You lost 20 lbs. in two weeks! That's a lot, so maybe your body is trying to catch up.

I did about 3 weeks out. And my weight loss was ~20 lbs then, too. I decided to put the scale AWAY due to frustration, etc. About a week and a half later, I weighed again and had lost 11 pounds. So, I am guessing that I am one who loses weight in fits and starts. Also, I started working out in the gym the 2nd week after WLS and maybe that was the result of building some muscle (or maybe I just shocked my body so much by starting to go to a gym, it didn't know what to do, LOL). dana

If you are eating your protein and exercising what you may be experiencing is a gain in lean muscle mass as you are LOSING fat! This is a GOOD thing! You are still losing FAT and you are putting on muscle which helps burn MORE fat! At this stage, the way to measure your weight loss is NOT by POUNDS but by INCHES. IF your clothes are getting looser but you are not losing pounds or are GAINING pounds, you are STILL losing FAT. Don't be discouraged. Eventually, things will turn, and you will begin losing weight again.

I feel the same way. I had my surgery on 1/9 and have lost 40 lbs but in the last 3-4 weeks nothing and I had a fill and I have been going to the gym. But My clothes fit better and people have noticed that I am losing so even though the scale doesn't move something is going on. Just keep doing what your suppose to do and congrats on your weight loss so far. I know it's discouraging but I keep telling myself I didn't gain it overnight I'm not going to lose it overnight either.

I"m in the same boat too. I had RNY on 1/31; have lost 28-29lbs....but have had 3 stalls. I am currently at the same weight for 2 weeks and 4 days...Thursday will be 3 weeks since I lost anthing...BUT I have lost inches. luckily I measured before surgery and a month out; so i know what's going on. My clothes are getting to big every week; but at the same weight. Don't be discouraged...I"ve heard so many people on here going through the same thing.....it's normal. I even up'd my calories a little and nothing...same weight; so I have to 'weight' it out and I"m sure i'll see a big drop soon becuase i'm doing EVERYTHING i'm supposed to; including exercising regularly and doing weight resistance....hang in there and don't allow this to get you down; from what i hear; there will be more stalls along the way and we can't let it get in our minds and depress us.

I would echo all that has been said. I didn't lose naything for two weeks and I was so frustrated but then I lot about ten in a week. I have been on another pkatteau and then this morning, I am finally off it. I am only 6 weeks out so I am not that far ahead of you- at 27 lbs down. A couple things that I have been thinkning about that I will pass on to you that you amy or may not find helpful. 1) This is about a new life. I get too sucked into what the numbers say on the scale and that really impacts my day. It's about real life so I am trying to be patient. 2) If we lose a little slower, it gives our skin time to spring back and perhaps avoid plastic surgery down the line. 3) be sure you have something to gage your inches lost- I have heard more and more that we lose inches as much as pounds. Good Luck- you are on the right path! Jula
