Protein shakes have calories too. I took this a nutrition class once. The only thing I came away from it with was this: Even rabbits can get fat. If you're having 10 shakes a day at 225 calories per shake, thats 2250 calories. I could easy do 10 shakes a day. They are not very filling. But I won't, I like to chew.

I have 2 shakes a day most days. Mine may be different than yours... but I'm obviously putting on lean muscle and getting stronger.

My surgeon recommends protein shakes right after surgery and then over a few weeks time I was to graduate to real food and no shakes. This was fine with me as I thought protein shakes were disgusting. Now (4 plus years out) I eat regular food and only drink a shake if I haven't eaten any protein or if I have no appetite. _____Joyce____

Protein shakes are "supplements"...And in my humble opinion should be used as just that and not meal replacements. The best absorbed protein and nutrients come in "real food"...and WLS is not a special diet...It's an aid to help us control our eating. Again it's just my opinion which is not medical and only based on all my personal research over the last 5 years. Protein drinks are usually lean and low cal as far as being a meal. But when you look at WHO protein supps are designed for, BODY BUILDERS, you should realise that if you just do protein and don't lift weights, that protein is not going to do much for you if you are not lifting weights, except add on calories. It's fine as a temporary means of protein until you can EAT the recommended amt of protein....but...well, use your own discretion and read about protein and how it is utilized in your body. Too much protein is not good either as it is not a stored nutrient and is difficult for your body to turn into waste...With your body being newly rewired...this causes double stress on the body's organs. I truly believe that working your way up to eating the correct amount of protein is half of what makes WL so fast in the first year. Here's a reputable site to read about protien and how it works in the "non-wls body"...although most of it applies to us too. Protein is still being studied and it is not a completely understood science yet....especially for WLS people! http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/protein/
