Question:
How to keep spirit up?

Im so glad I joined this website. I had surgery in the middle of August. I have only lost 31 pounds and most of that was at the beginning. It seems I dont lose for a few weeks then drop 2 - 3 pounds. Last week was only 1/2 lb. I feel like crying. Im doing everything right, I go to the gym. I do aerobics and weights. Not heavy weights so its not like im putting on muscle. also, I'm 130 pounds overweight so it seems like with eating sooo little that the weight would just be falling off at the beginning. HELP. Its so easy to just throw your hands up and give up.    — WKDWCH (posted on January 8, 2009)

I don't think any of us have not been there. What you need to do is stop getting on the scales every day....once a week should be it, same time of day, once a week. You have to look at the fact that your doing everything you need to be doing, there isn't any possible way you won't be dropping. Everyone gets to a plateau, then you drop. Just keep yourself moving forward and you will see results. If you give up now, you'll ruin all that you have done, don't give in to that, that's the easy way out. Perhaps you might be eating a little too much or not enough protein, you will lose better if you keep the diet high protein and lots of water. Keep thinking positive, you'll see the results, no one that has lost a lot of weight hasn't felt like giving up along the way! Carole

Is your profile correct with your BMI? If so, it says 25.something, which is right on the verge of a "normal" weight. If that's the case, it's very normal to slow down. If it's not the case, and you have quite a bit more to lose, then just remember, as long as you're still losing, you're going in the right direction. Look at how many calories you're getting in a day. You might need to do a food journal. There is sparkpeople.com that you can do one online. See if you're getting in too many carbs. You might also not be getting enough calories. It might help to add in some more protein calories into your diet. With exercising, you might just getting too few and your body thinks it's starving. Try to get at the very least 800 calories. Then look at how many calories you might be burning, so you might need closer to 1000 calories. Also try to change things up. If you're used to eating the same things each day, try to change things up for a few days. Good luck!

I agree with all of the other statements here.... My only additional suggestion would be to measure yourself. If you are in the gym and working out regularly you may be loosing inches but not pounds. Just one way to look for something positive.

I am confused. Your BMI is low and I didn't see in your profile what type of surgery you had. I had lapband and it takes us longer to lose weight. I had an additional problem in that my thyroid was not working so I was not losing weight. I didn't lose anything but a couple of lbs for the 1st 4 months. In fact, I actually gained some lbs. I was 7 months out, the 6th of Jan. I lost weight last month for the 1st time. If you are going to the gym or exercising then you will drop some weight. You may want to have your thyroid checked if you are not losing weight each month. Susan G.

Perhaps you are not getting in enough calories and/or protein and you are in starvation mode. Journal all of your intake for a week or two and you may find some of the answers there. If I'm not losing, I will tend to find too many carbs or sodium and my intake needs some tweaking. Also, try changing up your exercise routine and surprise your muscles with something different. Best of luck. Focus on non-scale victories as well. Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC

J, I agree with all the other posters; it could be any one or a combination of these things. Of all of them, I definitely would have my thyroid checked; it not working can not only cause a weight problem but can possibly be life threatening in certain situations. But if it is only hypothyroidism like a lot of women have, medication helps it as long as something else isn't causing it. Also eating so little as you said isn't the issue. What so little are you eating? Also if you continually eat the same diet and do the same exercises your metabolism "gets comfortable" and you plateau. Try muscle confusion; do exercise that your body isn't used to doing, and try yoga. iYoga.com has a lot of wonderful suggestions. I do it and it helps both mentally and physically. Definitely join a support group they are worth your time; you will have support in something that you truly believe in; you and the new "hottie" you are about to become. Let us know how you're doing. Hi J , I too am a slow loser. I will not lose anything for a week or so and then ..BAM 2-3 lbs gone. Don't be discouraged. Think of the positive. You will not a lot of flabby skin. Losing slower can be a good thing. I was not eating enough calories in my 3-4 month range and had to kick it up a notch. Since then I have lost steadily. Only 11 lbs a month, but I'll take it. I am now down 93 lbs and have 17 to goal. I know this will take a few months for me, but thats ok. I still think positive and work out. I lost 11 lbs last month and 10 inches. I was in a 24 now a 12. I know you will too. I was very frustrated at first, but with time I have learned to be patient and keep going and seeing the results makes me happy. Also, if possible, talk with your dietian about the possibility of upping the cals and protein too. I hear many people say that when they let their protein intake go down, there weight loss stopped. Just hang in there! What have you got to lose, but weight! Hugs, Kim

Every body is different and so no point comparing ! So cliche but soo true, 'patience pays'. I have undergone RNY on 22nd dec 2008 and know that I need a year and a half to get the weight down ! You need to respect the pace at which your body works and trust that all will be well...What has to happen, will happen, more splendidly than u can ever imagine...Have faith and move on, I wish u love n luck..
