Question:
Has anyone had any experience with eating tofu in the early days of post-op?

I am now 6 days post op, lap RNY. Been feeling great since day 2. Have been eating 6 small meals a day, three of them being protein drinks, as per my doc's recommendations? Some of the foods listed that he recommended are soft foods, so I tried tofu last evening for a small mean...2 hours later my protein drink. Could NOT fit in my last meal, felt my pouch never emptied. Stayed up hours to hope it emptied, finally went to bed, & got up and vomited it all up. Severe abdominal pains too. Any input on this?? I'd appreciate it    — Connie S. (posted on June 16, 2002)

I ate pureed tofu post op and did fine with it. How are you feeling this morning. Are you able to process other foods? Every person is different in the foods they seem to be able to tolerate. I could not eat scrambled eggs for the longest time, though I can now. I still have trouble with some meats, so I don't eat much of it at all. My advice to you would be to wait a week or so and try again, very small amount. See if that agrees with you. It would be a shame to give up on such a healthy protein option without several tries.

I am 15 months post-op and STILL can't eat tofu. It really does a number on me and usually makes me very ill. I think it's blocking my stoma .... a texture thing.

We had a doctor and nutritionist speak at our support group meeting and she suggested that Tofu would be one of the most difficult foods for our systems to process.

During the first 3 months after surgery, I pretty much lived on tofu. It was the only food I could tolerate without vomiting. However, I could only eat the soft tofu (silken). I did try the firm tofu and it came right up. I went to our local Japanese market and bought their instant broths, cut up the soft tofu and put it into my soup. Very yummy.
